It's SPRING! :)
I hope you had a wonderful Spring Break! The students were very excited to be back together again...I know I missed them! :) It is very odd to have only two days back to school and then the weekend, but we are making the most of it. Next week we will be back into our groove of being in school for a full week. :)
I love this time of year because the weather gets warmer and the flowers begin to bloom, but also because I begin to see my first graders developing into second graders. It's amazing to see the growth from the beginning of the year until now in the students. We will be working very hard this month and next in strengthening our skills and pushing ourselves further in doing our very best work.

We are climbing Mount Math Facts!
We are going to be intently focusing on our fluency of addition and subtraction facts. We practice addition and subtraction facts daily, but now we are going to concentrate on mastery of our facts by focusing on a set of addition facts each week. The students will each be given an addition and subtract fact mountain to track their fact progress for themselves. We will also have a class mountain poster where we will keep track of the facts we've mastered as a class. We will begin with addition first. This week your child will be practicing the 0+ and 1+ facts and will take a timed fact quiz on the 0+ and 1+ facts on Friday. If your child has 100% accuracy then they will move on to the 2+ facts. If they didn't receive a 100% on the timed test then they will be practicing those facts again to re-take the quiz before moving on to the 2+ facts. This program is completely individualized for your child's learning to be able to achieve mastery of math facts. Math fact fluency is the basis of math instruction, which is why Mrs. Kostelac and myself have designed this fun program to ensure that our students' are ready for 2nd grade math. :) The students will be practicing their facts each day in class during math instruction and are encouraged to practice the facts at home each night with their nightly homework. Thank you for your support as we work together to educate our mathematicians! :) Please stay tuned for more information about this program in the future.
