VANWAGNEN NEWS
In an effort to boost reading achievement, Michigan lawmakers passed the Read by Grade Three Law. To help more students reach reading proficiency by the end of third grade, the law requires extra support be provided to students K-3 who are not reading at grade level.
The law also states that a child may be retained in 3rd grade if they are more than one grade level behind in reading by the end of 3rd grade. Letters from the state will be sent to families of students scoring below grade level on the English Language Arts portion of the MSTEP upon completion of the assessment in May.
Please be aware that at the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, any student identified as at-risk in reading based on i-Ready and STAR Reading data, and/or parent or teacher concerns, was tested one-on-one by the Reading Interventionist. If they qualified, the student was given an Individual Reading Improvement Plan (for those more than one grade level behind) and they have been receiving extra reading support in the form of Leveled Literacy Intervention three times each week.
Please note, the M-Step score is the criteria the state uses to inform parents, however, the decision to retain a student will take into account more than one piece of data. The law does allow parents and guardians to ask that their student be promoted to fourth grade in some cases. If you have questions about how best to support your child, please consider attending Family Night at CES on February 20th. Mrs. Cripe and Mrs. Neal will be available to share information about the Read by Grade 3 Law, answer questions, provide resources, and offer ways to work with your child at home. You may also contact me via email at Jennifer.VanWagnen@myeagles.org or call (517) 592-2181 for more information.
