Proclamation of 1763 By: Dawson Arrington
The proclamation of 1763 was issued by King George. It stated that the colonist could not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. Georgia was not concerned because they were on a very popular trade route and they had already gained land from Spain and Native Americans after the war. In 1763, at the end of the French and Indian War, the British issued a proclamation, mainly intended to conciliate the Indians by checking the encroachment of settlers on their lands.

This act taxed items that were commonly used by the colonists such as newspapers, licenses & legal documents. There was many protests, some were violent. Many colonists hung government leaders, attacked the homes of British officials & tarred and feathered tax collectors. Colonial leaders gave speeches and pressed the colonists to join the Stamp Act Congress. The Sons of Liberty was formed and many joined to stand up against the taxes. Eventually, the Stamp Act was canceled but many more taxes were issued in its place to pay off the debt.
