October 2017 FOCUS
Bowie Baptist Association
The Work of the Church
Again I write you from the field, deployed with Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief to Vidor, Texas. Hurricane Harvey cut a broad path across the Texas Gulf Coast, leaving great damage in its wake. Numerous teams will come in and out through the end of the year, helping the people return to some sense of normalcy.
I have met some wonderful volunteers in my two Harvey deployments. In addition to the teams from Texas, I’ve worked with men and women from Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Ohio, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and New Mexico. At any given time as many as 80 people are on site, living at the church as they perform mudout operations for families whose homes were flooded by the storms.
What do these people have in common? They share a couple of traits. First and foremost, they share a love for Jesus Christ. As have you and I, they turned from sin to trust Him as Lord. They are our brothers and sisters in faith.
But the other trait they share is that they are putting their faith into action. Not content with sitting in the sight of such great need, they answered God’s call. Some are trained. Others are not. Some are highly skilled, with others less so. But they left their own sense of normal behind in order to serve the people hurt by recent storms, all in Christ’s name. And because they’ve done so, broken lives are mended with many persons joining us in Christ’s family through their efforts.
This is the work of the church. Don’t get me wrong, what we do on Sunday, and any other time in our church facilities, is important. It’s through these things that God shapes His children for ministry in the world. But if Christians are not leaving their normal to influence a broken world for Christ, something is amiss in our activity.
My encouragement to you, be Christians who engage. Don’t just drink in the faith. Live it. May the Bowie Association be a family of churches that raises up disciples that serve in the spirit of Romans 12:1.

The Center needs all kinds of canned goods, flour, corn meal, dried beans, macaroni and cheese, powdered milk, baby foods and formulas, and diapers. Any effort made for the Friendship Center will be appreciated. Some churches have chosen to include the Friendship Center in their annual budget and send a monthly check for support.
