House Council Update!
Our House Council Lead, Ms. Grace Schmidt, Shared this:
"When enrolled at The Franklin Academy, each student is assigned to one of our four Houses: Ershig, Ferlin, Hess, or Kaiser. In middle school, students meet every morning and end each day with the fellow members of their House. This creates comradery between grade levels and gives students a place where they feel at home. The Houses also participate in friendly competitions to receive points and work their way to the House Cup! Each House has an animal mascot and a corresponding color:
Ershig: Cougars, Red
Ferlin: Sharks, Purple
Hess: Lions, Yellow
Kaiser: Eagles, Green
On Wednesday, October 6th, our middle schoolers will have the opportunity to show House pride with... House Color Day! Members of each House will be able to dress in their House Colors in order to receive points toward the House Competition. Students who choose not to participate are required to come to school in uniform. Please note that clothes need to be at least 50% in the House color - for example, a student in Kaiser who only has green shoelaces will not be counted.
We hope to include the Lower School grades for House Color Day in the future. Stay tuned!"

Mrs. Owen's Early Kindergarten Class Learns about Gravity!
Mrs. Owen shared this:
"We really enjoyed talking about the Fall season and just what it means. We have noticed during our time outside all of the leaves falling and changing colors. We enjoyed many fall themed books, songs, and activities, especially Ring Around the Rosie.
Here's what else we have been up to this week:
- Letter Ff, how it looks, writes, sounds, and signs.
- Played the Crayon Game to firm up beginning letter sounds for Fall colors Red, Orange, Yellow, and Brown.
- Went on a Fall scavenger hunt to collect pine cones, rocks, bark, acorns, and leaves.
- Counted, sorted, and made patterns with our findings from our scavenger hunt.
- For Science, we performed a Free Fall Gravity experiment. The children really enjoyed dropping items from different heights and watching gravity work. We also listened to the sound of each item hitting the ground. We had many aha moments and discovered that many items fall at the same rates, while items such as leaves fall at different rates due to air resistance. We worked as a group to display our data on a chart. And, our saying of the week was "what goes up, must come down".
- Created fall wreaths, fall leaf handprints, and used a pencil to put red apples in our apple trees for some fun fine motor painting."

Mrs. Pickerill's Pre-Kindergarten Class!
Mrs. Pickerill shared this:
In science we tried the float or sink water activity. We used twigs, acorns, pine cones, and different types of leaves to see if they would float or sink in water. This science activity promotes scientific thinking of making predictions, observations, and comparison. We talked about why some objects sank to the bottom and how others floated to the top of the water."
