2021-22 Volume 1

A Note from Principal Marvel

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! We are excited to have students back in the building doing good things. A week into school and students are getting the hang of things. We take great pride in providing a safe climate and culture at Wasilla High School and this is why we frontload expectations for our students. To that end, our teachers and staff have common language to address common misbehaviors. I wanted to take a moment and share that language with parents so that everyone is on the same page. The more school and home can work together and be a team the better it is for our students. Following are the 5 one-liners that we use at WHS to address common misbehaviors:

  • Hats and Hoods: "Hats off" or "Hoods off"
  • Inappropriate language: "Language"
  • Inappropriate PDA: "PDA"
  • Blocking hallways: "Walk and Talk"
  • Cell phones: "Cell phones away, please."

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. As always, thank you for sharing your children with us.

The Warrior Chieftain

The 2022 Yearbook is on sale for $45 as an EARLY BIRD SPECIAL until the end of August. You may purchase a copy on School Pay Online. Each school year we purchase a limited number of copies of the yearbook. Oftentimes most of the copies are sold prior to the books arriving in May, never are they this cheap! Purchase your book before the end of August. September 1st the price will increase to $55 and will continue to increase throughout the school year.

If you purchased a yearbook last year, the SPRING SUPPLEMENTS have arrived! You can pick up your copy of the spring supplement, which includes all spring sports from school year 2021, with Mrs. Beebe in room 134.

Big picture

Youth 360

Youth 360 is excited to be starting our third school year serving WHS students and families! All of our programs are free and open to every WHS student. Students who are connected with their families, a strong peer group, supportive adults and their community are more likely to make positive choices and feel good about themselves. All Youth 360 programs are designed to build connections and skills for Mat-Su teens.

Our after-school youth club is a fun, relaxed place for students to connect with others. The club is located on the WHS campus and is open each school day until 6 pm. Activities vary widely and are catered to youth interests! Some popular activities have included cooking, field games, creative expression, team competitions, science activities, and much more. Food and transportation are available. Sign up at www.youth-360.org or by stopping into the WHS front desk or our program site, in front of WHS next to the Wasilla Pool parking lot.

Our community activity stipend program is also up and running this year. Youth 360 pays for approved community-based activities for WHS students. If you’re looking for things for your teen to do, or if your student is already in an approved activity and you need help paying for it, let us know. You can get more info at www.youth-360.org or by calling 373-3613.

Everyone needs a place to connect! Teens that feel connected with their family, peers and community are more likely to avoid drugs and alcohol and experience strong mental health. Call us at 373-3613, visit us online, stop into our program, or sign up for text alerts by sending “Youth 360” to 745-5826.

All About Seniors

The deadline for Senior Portraits for the yearbook will be here before you know it! Be looking for the announcement of the SENIOR PORTRAIT form in September. This will be how you submit your senior photo for the yearbook. It will be open for one month! If you haven’t planned for senior photos yet, there’s still a few weeks to get that scheduled.

Counseling Corner

Counselors are currently working through schedule changes in the order they are received. If your student is needing a schedule change, please use the Google form that is linked on the Counseling section of the Wasilla High School website. Students must be logged into their Google account to request their schedule change. Deadline for schedule changes is Wednesday, September 1st.

Note from the Nurse

I am very excited to be a part of Warrior Nation this year! I am getting to know your students and learning about their health needs. As we enter another school year battling COVID-19, some things have changed, but it is important to remember:

Students and staff should still stay home with symptoms. Everyone (including vaccinated individuals) should be tested for COVID-19 if they have any symptoms (fever, chills, cough, difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea). Please email negative test results to rhonda.lackey@matsuk12.us.

See Keeping Schools Safe & Open for our district’s plan for responding to COVID and the State of Alaska Quarantine Guidance for information about isolation and quarantine.

If your student has health needs, contact me to create a plan to keep them safe and healthy at school. Please submit records if your student received vaccinations over the summer. Religious exemption forms must be updated yearly.

Thank you for allowing me to work with your students,

Rhonda Lackey, MSN, RN, NCSN
