College Board/AP 2019 Changes
July 2019 Newsletter
Welcome!
To our returning teachers, we hope you had a restful and relaxing summer! For our new teachers, welcome to the RISD family and we are so happy to have you joining us in our work with College Board Advanced Placement courses.
Beginning in the fall of 2019, College Board is making many changes that will not only help provide resources to our AP teachers, but more importantly, will support the learning of our students. Many of you had the chance to meet with me in May and we began having conversations around what these changes would look like. At the time of our meeting, College Board had only released the Curriculum and Exam Description resources. However, on August 1, they will open up the next set of resources that will be available this fall.
Although College Board has suggested that we provide these resources to our students in a certain order, we must evaluate how this sequence will effect RISD teachers and students. There will be some times in this process that RISD will ask that you NOT complete a step in the order that College Board suggest. Due to our partnership with Total Registration, RISD will have the opportunity to provide you and our students with resources that will save you time and simplify processes
It is an exciting time to be teaching AP and we are so happy to have you joining us in this journey in 2019-2020!

What to Expect August 1
On August 1, College Board will release their next set of teacher and student resources. It is important that you read through the following information and follow these steps.
Although College Board has been providing general information about these new resources, they have not released information in a way that we can preview it as a live demonstration. This means that just like you, we will be looking at these resources for the first time on August 1.
Submit an AP Audit or Syllabus
- AP Syllabus - ONLY teachers in AP Computer Science Principles, Capstone Research and Capstone Seminar must provide a syllabus this year.
- AP Audit - All other subjects MUST complete an AP audit. Don’t know how to complete an audit OR why you should complete one, learn more here:. https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-course-audit/explore-by-role/teachers
I have submitted my audit or syllabus, now what?
- Your campus AP Principal or AP Coordinator must approve your audit or syllabus.
- After your campus has approved your audit or syllabus, then College Board must approve it.
- When approved, you will receive notification.
How do I set up course sections so my students can join my AP classes?
- DO NOT CREATE COURSE SECTIONS FOR YOUR STUDENTS TO JOIN YOUR AP CLASSROOM
- College Board states that you or your campus AP coordinator can establish AP course sections. In RISD, the AP coordinators will establish course sections for each AP teacher on the campus.
Why do we want the coordinators to establish the course sections?
- Allows your campus AP coordinator to create a one stop shop for your students to obtain join codes and join your AP courses using a feature already available in Total Registration.
- Reduces the amount of work you would have to complete when providing codes to your students and to your digital classroom each time a student adds or drops your course due to schedule changes at the beginning of the year.
- Allows your campus AP Coordinator to create a consistent naming pattern for registration of ALL STUDENTS on your campus for ALL AP EXAMS.
Will AP Teachers Have Time to Review These Resources Together?
In mid-September, the Advanced Learning Services office and RISD Curriculum Directors, will host AP teachers from across the district for an AP Teacher Workshop Day. During this day, AP teachers will be able to collaborate and finalize their AP scope and sequence, testing calendars, etc. for the 19-20 school year.
This AP workshop day WILL NOT provide enough time for you and AP PLC team to begin examining and discussing the CEDs and other resources for the first time. AP teachers should already be collaborating and examining these new AP resources.
APSI Certificate Submission
APSI certificates are not released by colleges and universities until the bills are paid. At the end of the summer, they will bill the Advanced Learning Services office and then we will pay for your training. Once paid, the teachers are sent a certificate for their records and they will need to provide 2 copies to RISD by September 30, 2019.
- Copy 1- to Carolyn Crise in the Advanced Learning Services office for us to submit to TEA.
- Copy 2 – to True North Logic as an external request for you to request your chosen PD hour options for 19-20.
