Second Street Happenings
Thanksgiving Lunch at SSS
Thursday was the standing tradition that Second Street School has had for years. It was the Thanksgiving lunch where parents came and eat with their children for about 45 minutes. As a person who has gone to Second Street for about nine years now, this has been a thing that has been here for as long as I can remember. This to a lot of people (including me) this is very important and children want their families to come to eat lunch with them. There is a lot of preparation for this lunch. The cafeteria staff even asks for additional people to come in that day. They fed approximately 624 students while they fed about 300-400 parents. This tradition will most likely stay for many years to come and I hope that everyone gets to experience it while they go to this school or while they have a child that goes to this school. Thank you to all of the cafeteria staff for making this possible and for the parents who took their lunch to come to eat with their children. (The chocolate cake was GREAT!)
An interview with Ms. Holly
As many of you know we have a new Japanese teacher. I sat down with her to learn a little more about her.
Q: How do you feel about working with your classes? A: It’s stressful but I enjoy teaching.l Q: How do you feel about working here? A: I enjoy my coworkers. Q: How do you feel about each of your classes? A: I want students to pay attention but like the classes. Q: What do you think about the school? A: I think it’s nice but could use better discipline. Q: Would you like to add anything? A: I think that better discipline and organization would help. Students lack respect for their teachers. I hope to change that.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a day that we celebrate all the things that we are thankful for. Thanksgiving was first celebrated when the pilgrims came to America and joined the Native Americans to have a three-day long feast in 1621. To this day we still celebrate Thanksgiving by gathering with our families and friends and having a huge feast of our own.

Wildfires in California
by Margaret W.
Recently, California has been facing very tragic wildfires. Nobody knows what started the fire and who started, but, approximately 2 dozen victims blame Pacific Gas & Electric Co. for not being able to maintain the power lines.
There are two main wildfires going around in California, “Camp Fire”, which is north of Sacremento in Butte County and, “Woolsey Fire”, which is near Los Angeles, in Ventura County. “Camp Fire” has left 130 people missing, has destroyed nearly 9,000 homes, burned 140,000 acres and, has forced at least 52,000 people into evacuation. Although “Woolsey Fire” has not done nearly the same amount of damage, it has still burned 98,362 acres and has destroyed approximately 500 homes.
Wildfire evacuees have set up a camp in a Walmart parking lot due to the fact that shelters, hotels, etc. are at capacity and cannot hold any more people. Along, with the wildfires, there is now an air pollution concern due to the wildfire. Smog and heavy smoke are affecting counties 100 miles away and the state is warning people about the air quality.
Anadite, a young woman living with her father, Gordon, has a sad story about their attempt to evacuate. She says, “I got in the car and all of a sudden my dad went back into the house to get something. So I honked the horn to tell him hurry up. Then, I saw the kitchen collapse and I honked again, but no one came out. I decided to start driving, but by that time, the tires had melted and I couldn’t drive off.” Although Anadite did manage to evacuate from the fire, her father’s death added to the long list of people that the fire has killed.
Many celebrities have also lost their homes and have had to evacuate because of the fire. The “Woolsey Fire” hit Malibu and Miley Cyrus and her Fiance, Liam Hemsworth lost their home. Neil Young, Robin Thicke, Camille Grammer, and Robert Derrickson are more celebrities that add to the list.
The two wildfires in Northern and Southern California are devastating Californian residents and even people outside of California. Celebrities have lost their homes, people have started camping out in parking lots, and many people have gone missing or have died. These wildfires have a death toll of 59 people and possibly more to come.
House Minority Leader Rocky Adkins Makes a Run for Governor
by Audrey G.
With the midterm elections officially over, the race for governor is just beginning. Incumbent governor Matt Bevin announced back in August that he plans to run for reelection in 2019. Andy Beshear also plans to run for governor under the democratic party. Up until now, these have been the only people running but on Wednesday Rocky Adkins announced that he will be running for governor.
Mr. Adkins is the representative for the 99th district in Kentucky. He was born and raised in Sandy Hook, Kentucky and has been doing everything he can to help the citizens of Kentucky. He is running with Stephanie Horne, a current Jefferson County school board member. Both are optimistic about the future of Kentucky.
Some of their main focus points for their campaign are education, solving the drug epidemic, and enhancing job opportunities for Eastern Kentucky residents. Adkins has been serving Kentucky since 1987 and has been advocating for improvement. During the recent pension crisis, he gained a lot of support among teachers.
He announced his campaign at a rally at his alma mater, Morehead State University. Adkins’ running mate Stephanie Horne, his Morehead State University basketball coach Wayne Martin, and former governor Paul Patton were just a few of the people who spoke in support of him. He is running as a Democratic candidate and hopes to win the primary in May 2019.

Murder in the Manor
Eli C., Colin P., and Will W. have prepared a mystery puzzle. Use the clues they've given you to solve this mystery! Below, you will find all the information you need to solve the puzzle.
Someone has lost their life at the Manor in the woods. That man was Eli; he was the rich owner, and he had hosted a house party that night. He invited his friends from high school, Jerry, Gerald, and Barry, and his girlfriend,Sam. When arriving at the scene, police officers found Eli murdered in his bed with a handgun on the mattress. They could not extract any DNA from the handgun except for Sam’s. She owned the handgun and said she had laid it on her nightstand last night. When investigating her, she said sheand Eli had had an argument last night. She is not very wealthy and has a concealed carry permit. She also mentioned Eli won a lot of poker and Gerald was getting mad. Gerald was one of the people that built the manor and one of Eli's closest friends. Gerald is also an expert with guns and knew the entire layout of the house. The next person the police interrogated was Jerry. He wasn’t Eli’s best friend in high school and Sam had said he was nervous and suspicious the night Eli was murdered. He told the police, “I was up all night and saw Barry roaming the halls.” Barry was probably one of Eli’s best friends. He has a short temper and used to like Sam. He slept in the room next to Eli’s and was the first one to react to the atrocity. He used to like Sam in high school and told Eli he did, but Eli got with her before he could. Barry is also a felon for theft and brought gloves to the party. He lost many games of poker and lost money to Eli like Gerald.
Who murdered Eli?
Answers will be released in the next issue of The Frankfort Tribune! In the meantime, make your best guess in the poll below!
Rain- A Haiku Story
By Lucy S
The sound of water
Pitter-pattering outside
Tells me the weather
I throw my coat on
The feel of it is so sleek
The hood on my head
I jump out the door
The door slamming behind me
I can’t wait for this
Adventure will come
The rain touches my skin
As to say hello
The pouring rain is
Already making me laugh
I just jump right in
The puddle fills my
Boots up with the sloshy rain
It drips down my cheeks
The rain starts to stop
I see the sun glimmering
A rainbow will come

Advice from Miss Knows a Lot and Miss Helping Hands
Dear Miss Know-it-all,
I feel like I'm being talked about behind my back by close friends. What should I do?
Sincerely, Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
I don't exactly know how to solve this problem, except for confronting your friends face to face. This may be a difficult solution to solve your problem, but it really is the best way to find out if your close friends are really your friends at all. The two things that could happen are that your friends could tell you the truth and reveal that they are talking about you, or the could reveal that they are not talking about you, which they could be telling the truth or lying. Overall, most likely your friends are not talking about you and you're being paranoid, but if they are talking about you behind your back, obviously they must not really be your friends at all. Good luck!
Sincerely,
Miss Know-it-all
