A Message from Marcie

Happy Earth Day, South Park!

In honor of Earth Day, a couple of our 5th-grade students have organized a neighborhood garbage pick-up from 4:00-5:00 tomorrow, April 23. All families are welcome to meet at South Park on the Rosewood blacktop where the students will hand out gloves and garbage bags for anyone who wants to participate. Thanks for helping us keep our neighborhood clean!

We are happy to report that our Read-a-thon is off to an amazing start! We’ve just reached the midpoint of the fundraiser, and we’ve already surpassed the funds needed to build a Storywalk in our park. Now we’re thinking of what other exciting projects our reading could support! More importantly, our penguins have read over 12,000 minutes and counting! Students will receive fun prizes at the end of the fundraiser for reaching benchmarks of minutes read and funds raised, not to mention the fun of racing against their classmates and other classes. Currently, Mrs. Merens’ class is in the lead! There’s one week left and it’s not too late to join the fun. Contact Mrs. Jahng at if you’d like more information.

Have a wonderful weekend! Enjoy tomorrow's beautiful weather!

Erin's Law

Dear Parents and Guardians of Elementary School Students,

Erin’s Law (House Bill 6193) was signed by Governor Pat Quinn on January 24, 2013. This law requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades Pre-K through 12. District 109 partners with Childhood Victories, Inc., an organization founded by Victor Pacini who is a motivational speaker and a survivor of sexual abuse. Speakers from Childhood Victories, Inc. provide programming for our students that teaches them basic skills to keep them safe from dangerous or abusive situations. The program, Be Seen and Heard 2.0, is developmentally appropriate, interactive, aligned with learning standards, and will cover the following topics:

  • Distinguishing safe from unsafe touches

  • Safety rules at home and school

  • Saying “NO”

  • Secrets

  • It’s not the child’s fault if someone touches them

  • Telling a trusted adult

The staff from Childhood Victories, Inc. will be presenting to our elementary students on the following dates:

  • Wilmot: Monday May 9th

  • South Park: Monday May 9th

  • Walden: Wednesday May 11th

  • Kipling: Wednesday May 11th

Parents can view Victor Pacini’s parent video to preview the concepts of the Be Seen and Heard 2.0 program.

Requests to Opt-Out: If you prefer that your child opt-out of this prevention education session, please email your child’s school principal by Friday May 6. Please also feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions or concerns.

Bathroom Changes

Illinois HB156 provides that menstrual hygiene products shall be made available in bathrooms of every school building that are open for student use in grades 4 through 12 during the regular school day. Dispensers have been installed in all bathrooms at the middle schools and are in the process of being installed in the elementary schools. This measure allows for free and equitable access to products for all who use the bathroom facilities, while also creating a supportive school environment for all 109 students. If this prompts questions for your child, we would encourage you to discuss it at home.
