UIL

Every fall Jenna Madrigal, our UIL director for ORMS, works with the GT students to see what aptitude they might have for the various UIL Academic events. Students chose which tests they want to take for UIL. Practices start soon for UIL with all the different coaches of each event (see below). UIL is a great way for your GT child to show off their academic gifts, be a part of a team, learn and grow in various areas, compete against other schools, earn possible scholarships in high school and have so much fun! UIL competitions are for 7th and 8th graders only, but 6th graders can attend practices and prepare for when they can compete next year!

Coach Winki

The first weeks of October Coach Winki, a retired teacher from NBISD and current Newk's Tennis Ranch motivational team coach, came to work with the GT students on social-emotional learning. They did the Personality Zoo quiz and discussed the personality traits of each animal and how they work with others. They did the handcuffs challenge, Numbers worksheet, Thumb Wars and Chickenplucker for the final event. Students learned about themselves and team work.

Take this quiz at home to see what personality animal you have and ask your child what theirs is!

Beyond the Blackboard

The week of October 7-11 6th grade GT watched the made-for-TV movie Beyond the Blackboard about a first year teacher in Utah who has to teach homeless students. It is based on the true story of Stacey Bess and her struggles to get a school the necessary supplies, equipment and attention it needed. It's a great movie to teach kids about perspective and empathy.

Gaming

The week of October 21-25 students were able to play games. Some were specifically purchased with social-emotional intention for our 6th grade students so they can learn more about themselves and their classmates. The other games like Jenga, Guess Who, Sorry, etc. are great for building good teamwork skills. This will help them prepare for the end of year field trip to The NB Escape Haus when they have work together to escape the room they're put in.

7th Grade

Coach Winki

The week of October 14-18 Coach Winki visited 7th grade GT. Coach Winki is a retired NBISD employee who works at Newks Tennis Ranch doing the team activities who volunteered her time to visit us this month. Students were able to do a hand shake challenge, pig activity, color personality quiz, hoops competition, took an EQ (empathy IQ) test and we ended on Friday in the gym for the Pit Game. Students learned a lot about themselves and how they work with others through these challenges, activities and games.

The Water is Wide

The week of October 21-25 7th grade GT watched the movie The Water is Wide, a made-for-TV movie from 2006, but set in 1969. Pat Conroy, an ambitious, slightly rebellious, idealistic teacher, accepts Bennington county South Carolina's school board superintendent's offer to teach the all-black kids of the pauper fishery community on Yamacraw Island. Staff-less 'head' mistress Brown incarnates stupidity and blind rule obedience, her didactic skills consisting in scolding her students mercilessly. Pat moves heaven and earth to motivate and educate, but after finally getting through to pupils and parents, is refused contract renewal by the arch-conservative authorities. This is a remake of the movie Conrack from 1974.

This is a great movie to teach empathy and understanding. Like the movie students watched last year (Beyond the Blackboard) we hope that they get to see how education has changed over the years. Students can also see the difference between how these kids were taught decades ago and how they are taught now.

Backpack Design Sketching

Students spent the last week of October sketching out designs for their backpack project.

Science Fest 2019

On Sunday, October 6 from 2-6PM 8th grade GT students had the opportunity to volunteer to work the STEM Booth at the Science Fest. Since the first Science Fest 8th grade GT has always had a booth so students could show off various Makerspace and STEM activities. This year we took Magnatiles for them to show kids how to use. So much fun!

Farmer's Market Research

On Saturday, October 26 8th grade GT went to the New Braunfels Farmer's Market to do research of their Marketing Challenge. They viewed vendor sale items, listened to the Farmer's Market Manager discuss the dos and don'ts for the Market and ask any questions they had. They also started discussing as a group what they might sell in December. Shark Tank is coming up and students will have to have a product idea and sample for that night in November to pitch it to the Sharks in hopes of gaining an investor for the Farmer's Market. Please see dates below and email Ms. Cowan and Ms. Bryant if you see any conflicts or have a date preference. Thank you!
