It's hard to believe that we are nearly done with January! 2023 is already starting to fly! We have a few special events coming up in the next few weeks. Please be sure to see information below about them.

As a reminder with winter weather, if the temperature is 15 degrees or above (with wind chill), our students will be going outside. With the snow on the ground, students need to have snowpants, boots, and gloves to go into the snow. Even if your child is staying on the blacktop or playground, we recommend sending them with snow gear for warmth and to help keep their clothes dry. As always, please label your child's outerwear with their name so that if it becomes lost it is easy to return it to them.

We are so proud of all of our students that participated in our Spelling Bee last week!! Congratulations to Kara for 1st place and Max for 2nd place!

Each of our participants represented themselves and their classrooms so well. Thank you for working so hard on practicing your words! A big thank you to all of our staff members that helped to put the spelling bee on, especially Mrs. Henning that ran the bee. It was a wonderful showcase of hard work and cheering one another on. Well done to all!

A huge shoutout to our Oakland families for bringing in 1,344 items for Antioch's Open Arms Mission. Your generosity will help those directly in our community. Student council is so grateful for the kindness shown.

Our top winning grade level was 2nd grade, with 465 items!

Student Council is holding a fundraiser next week and offering Valentine's for student purchase! Your child will be brining home more information on this on Monday. Please see below for what the order forms will look like.

Please be on the lookout for a communication from the district next week regarding the 5Essentials Survey. This survey helps to provide valuable feedback regarding our schools. We would really appreciate you taking the time to fill out this important information.

If you have students that attend more than one Antioch CCSD 34 school, we ask that you please fill one out for each school. Thank you for being on the lookout for this and for taking time to share your viewpoint with us.

Oakland is so excited for the return of our STEM Night!!

We hope that your family will join us on Wednesday, February 8th from 5:30 - 7:00 pm for an evening of Valentine Themed STEM challenges!! There will be 5 different challenges to participate in. We can't wait to see you!

We are still in need of some donations to help our evening be a success. If you are able to help support, we would appreciate any of the following items:

• colored copy paper
• conversation hearts
• clear tape

Clark Photography will be here March 7th to take Spring Pictures. All students will be photographed. This is a pre-pay program, If you pre-order they will send the packages to the school for distribution. If you do not pre-order, you will receive a link to order at a later date. Please join Mrs. Adams on Monday, February 27th from 6 - 7 pm at the Lake Villa Public Library! Come and enjoy a few read alouds and share some of your favorite books with her, too!

Our Boosters are sponsoring an Out of This World Read-A-Thon for our students beginning next month. We will be kicking our program off on January 31st at our building assembly to get students excited. Students will read through the month of February and culminate the Read-A-Thon during Read Across America Week the first week of March. Information will be sent home with students on Wednesday, February 1st. We hope that all of our students will join in on the reading fun to meet their reading goal and earn some fun prizes!

We are almost to our 100th Day of School! That means we will be 100 Days Smarter and have been working hard for those 100 Days. Please join us in celebrating by having your child dress as if they were 100 years old!

The 100th Day of School is on February 1, 2023.

With the winter season upon us, sickness is on the rise. A few reminders to help you decide if you should send your child to school or not:

• Students must be fever free without medication for 24 hours to attend school
• Students must not have been vomiting or have diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school after illness
• If your child is visibly sick, even without a fever, please do not send them as it is often quite difficult for them to make it through the day

K-8 Student Winter NWEA Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) reports will be sent home via email the week of February 6th. Look for the communication soon.
