The Verb Ser

Ser is an irregular verb that means "to be". This means it doesn't follow the regular conjugation rules.


You only use ser in a sentence if the subject and what it's doing follows the DOCTOR acronym.

D - Date

O - Occupation

C - Characteristic

T - Time

O - Origin

R - Relation


The conjugations for ser are:

Yo = soy

Tú = eres

El/ella/usted = son

Nosotros = somos

Ellos/ellas/ustedes = son

The Verb Estar

The verb Estar is also an irregular verb that means "to be". Again, this means, that the conjugation rules are different for this type of verb.


You can only use estar in a sentence if it follows the PLACE acronym.

P - Position

L - Location

A - Action

C - Condition

E - Emotion


Example Sentences Using Estar:


P osition - La computadora está encima de la mesa.

L ocation - Colleyville está in Texas.

A ction- Estoy comiendo la pizza.

C ondition - Estamos enfermos.

For how you feel and where you are, always use the verb ESTAR!

Whenever describing what you or someone is not, put NO before the correct conjugated form of the verb.

Don't Forget

To make an adjective plural:

  1. If it ends in a vowel add “s”

  2. If it ends in a consonant add “es”


If the subject is singular, leave it the way it is. Make sure the gender of the subject matches up with the gender of the adjective.

boy: bonito
