Principal's Corner
Grand View Elementary Families,
The new school year has started smoothly. In every classroom, students are already engaged in meaningful learning. We spent the first couple weeks setting the tone for the year by reviewing the procedures and routines of the school day. Additionally, our students have relearned ways to interact appropriately and make choices to solve conflicts with peers. In the upcoming weeks, teachers will start engaging our students in new project based learning units. In project based learning, students will work on a project over an extended period of time that engages them in solving a real-world problem or answering a complex question. At the end of their projects, we will invite you into the school to share in their learning and creativity.
Having grit and perseverance takes a lot of energy. As your child continues to engage in deeper learning throughout the school year, it will become more important for their developing brains and bodies to be prepared when they arrive at school. You can set your child up for success by ensuring that they regularly eat a healthy balanced diet, get lots of sleep each night, and feel safe and secure at home. If you have any questions about how to better prepare your student for school, ask your child’s teacher.
Thanks for sharing your children with us.

Miss Davis (Kindergarten): Kindergartners have started the year off strong! We have been reviewing all of our letter names and letter sounds. In math, we are working on identifying numbers, counting to 20, and quantity discrimination. We have started learning about maps and have made our own maps of our classroom and our school. This will translate over to our PBL project, which we will be starting in 2 weeks!
Miss Baker (First/Second): First and Second grade has been spending a lot of time getting to know each other these last couple weeks. We have done many activities and projects with partners to community and teamwork. In math, both classes have been working on addition fluency within 10 and 20. We have also been learning about different kinds of jobs and businesses in our community and beyond.
Mrs. Meyers (Second Core): The 2nd graders have been working hard on describing characters in a story and identifying main ideas and details for reading. In math, we are building math fact fluency with addition and subtraction. We have also been taking apart numbers to make easier problems to solve.
At Home
While sharing the love of literacy and learning during the summer is very important (to reduce the risk of the "Summer Slide"), it is also important to continue practicing those good learning habits at home during the school year. Setting the expectation of reading at home, talking to students about what they are reading, practicing math facts, and sharing real-world examples of mathematics is a great way to ensure that what your students learn while at school will stick in their minds and continue their growth throughout the school year.
One way to make math more fun for kids is to have your child(ren) help you cook - measuring, fractions, and ratios are all integrated into the kitchen, and can help students see ways in which math is all around us!
Another way to make math facts or sight words more interesting for your children is to practice them with your children. Flash cards are fun for the person holding the answers, so try splitting the cards in half with your child(ren), and let them quiz you! Better yet, let them "catch" you messing up your facts once in awhile to help them keep interest in what can sometimes be a mundane task.
