THE FORMULA FOR A GOOD APOLOGY
It takes a big person to say "I'm sorry."
When students make poor choices (and let's face it, that's what kids sometimes do), it is important that they take responsibility for their actions and apologize for their misstep. A good apology acknowledges what was wrong, why it was wrong and there is a promise not to repeat it. Ideally, the response to an apology is also to acknowledge what was wrong and then to forgive.
Please support our use of these social scripts with your child/ren. (And feel free to use them at home, too!)
A Script for a Good Apology
- "I am sorry for" (fill in what poor choice was made) "because" (say why it was wrong) "and I promise" (say how you will avoid making that same poor choice again).
Examples of Using the Apology Script Include:
- Matt, I am sorry for pushing you on the playground because you could have gotten hurt and I promise I won't be so rough anymore.
- Mr. Lanza, I am sorry for standing on the toilet because I could have fallen and gotten hurt and I promise I will follow the bathroom rules.
- Lia, I am sorry for calling you weak because I know that was mean and hurt your feelings, and I promise I will be kinder to you.
A Script for Accepting an Apology (Thanks to Miss Pam in Grade One for helping create this script.)
- (Repeat what was done and why it was wrong), "but I forgive you."
Examples of Accepting an Apology:
- "It's not right to push anyone but I forgive you."
- "You could have fallen into the toilet when you were standing on it, but I forgive you."
- "It's not respectful to call people names, but I forgive you."
For more information or support regarding school behavioral expectations, apologies, forgiveness or the use of social scripts, feel free to reach out to Miss DiNardo (ddinardo@trschoools.com), or me (smonetti@trschools.com). Thank you for your support!
