Principal's Message

Hello Grizzlies,

Welcome back! We are so excited to welcome you back next week. Teachers have been working hard all week preparing lessons, getting classrooms ready and receiving training to help make this year as amazing as possible.

Remember, Monday 8/30 is a day just for 9th graders, 10th graders that were in CDL for the whole year last year and for any students new to AHS. It is a half day, please see the schedule below. It is a day to get your schedule, learn a little bit about the school and meet all your teachers. We will have tables set up in the quad so you can pick up your schedule and head to class. Schedules are also viewable in PowerSchool. It’s going to be fun!

Tuesday, Aug. 31 will be our first day with ALL students back on campus. It will be a “Red Day” meaning you will go to periods 1-4. (see bell schedule below).

In order for this year to be as safe as can be, it’s important that we all follow the COVID-19 safety protocols. That means wearing a mask at all times (indoors and outdoors), social distancing (6 feet outdoors and 3 feet indoors whenever possible), washing/sanitizing our hands and staying home when we don’t feel well.

I look forward seeing our students next week. We all missed the energy and purpose that our students bring on a daily basis last year.

Sincerely,

Benjamin Bell

Half Day for 9th Graders & New Students - 8/30 Half Day for 9th Graders & New Students - 8/30

Starting at 12:20pm, there will be Optional Campus Tours running until 12:50pm. Feel free to jump into a tour lead by our leadership students. They will meet on the quad and leave for multiple tours throughout lunch!

Katrina Caudill - Special Ed

Hello Everyone! My name is Katrina Caudill and I will be teaching Study Skills. I grew up in a tiny town in the woods of Virginia and was homeschooled until I graduated high school. That didn’t stop me from pursuing a career in education. As a child, I used to beg my sisters to play “public school” where I’d teach mini lessons and assign handwritten worksheets. Since then I have taught in classrooms in Honduras, Japan, and Texas. I took some time from classroom teaching to travel to 30 countries, hike the Appalachian Trail, spend time with my family, and attempt to learn to ski in Colorado. I dreamed about moving to Oregon for a long time and finally made that a reality last summer. I am so excited to be a part of the AHS family. We’re in this together and I know we’ll make it a great year!

Marie Davol - French

Hi, my name is Marie Davol and I am going to be the new French teacher at Ashland High School. I have lived in Ashland for the last 12 years and am excited to be joining such a wonderful and supportive community, especially since my children go to school in the district. I am passionate about travel, language, and the exploration of other cultures and am looking forward to sharing my passion with my students

Ty Hampton - Humanities

Ty Hampton is joining the Humanities staff at AHS and will be the 2022 yearbook advisor in addition to running the revived Reading and Writing Lab. Ty and his wife Tiffany moved to Ashland in 2012 from Missoula, Montana where they met as University of Montana Grizzlies -- making Ty serendipitously now twice a Grizzly! Coming from a background in print journalism, Ty's path to AHS includes 8 years teaching experience at McLoughlin Middle School in Medford. The Hampton household is made up of Ty and Tiffany, their 2.5-year-old son Ripley, and their 2 miniature dachshunds.

John Joranco - Math

I’m really excited to be returning to teaching. I had taught Math in California for five years but when my family and I moved to Ashland 3 years ago I decided to give Architecture another go. Being back in Architecture was a good experience but each year I found myself missing teaching more and more and realized that it is my true calling. I look forward to working at such a great school as Ashland high.

Madison Malot - Counselor

Hi everyone! My name is Madison Malot and I am a new school counselor at AHS this year. I was born and raised here in Central Point and am returning back to Southern Oregon after the last 4 years in Arizona working with the State of Arizona as a Rehabilitation Counselor/Supervisor for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. I am very excited to be working with students here at AHS. Please stop by the counseling office and say hello!

Ian Miller - Band

Mr. Miller is coming to Ashland after serving for two years as a doctoral graduate instructor at the University of Colorado Boulder and he has been teaching music and band for 18 years now in PA, NJ, FL, CO & now Oregon. At CU Boulder he taught future music teachers and ran numerous outreach ensembles for local students as well as working with their "Trying on Teaching" program for future music teachers. His major instrument is the saxophone and he will be playing locally with the Rogue Valley Symphonic Band starting this fall.

Henry Papa - Humanities

Hello, my name is Henry Papa and I am a Humanities teacher at AHS. I will be teaching Psychology and College, Career Readiness. When I’m not in school or teaching, I’m trying to be outside as much as possible. Some of my favorite hobbies include traveling, hiking, camping, and most importantly, disc golfing. I’ve recently moved back to Ashland after living in Reno, NV and Portland, OR. This will be my first year teaching and I couldn’t be more excited to be here at AHS.

Alec Slinkard-Galpin - Counseling

Hello, my name is Alec Slinkard-Galpin and I will be one of the school counselors this year! I am coming here after spending my last 4 years at Maslow and South Medford High School respectively. I love being goofy and doing impressions. I also have two cats, one of which has CH which is a blast! I love working with youth in order to help them be as successful as possible and to show them that they are never alone. I can’t wait to work alongside all of you in order to help our students flourish:)

Lucinda Ulrich - Grizzly Online Academy

Growing up the only child of two college professors in the high desert landscape of Albuquerque, New Mexico, I was raised to be independent, inquisitive, adventurous and intellectually curious. I consider myself to be a creative citizen of the world and a lifelong learner. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Creative Writing, Theater and Video Production and a Master's Degree in Secondary Education and Communicative Arts, both from the University of New Mexico. Currently, I am expanding my skill set and working towards the completion of an Associates of Arts Degree in Art and Design at Rogue Community College. One of my favorite things is to see a student's "aha moment," that moment of realization, a breakthrough, growth, a small step forward -- what have you. I am also passionate about helping students who struggle or who are not successful in the traditional school system. I recognize and honor that there is no one path to success and no one universal definition of success. I have been a GED Instructor/Coordinator, media arts teacher, alternative educator, youth social worker, theater instructor and an English teacher. I live in Ashland with my daughter, Chloe, Tio the Circus Dog, Cocoa the Lazy Leopard Gecko and Speedy the Wonder Tortoise. This year I will be supporting students and families in Ashland High School's Online Academy. I am VERY excited to be part of such an amazing team!
