11 Penn students named National Merit Finalists
Penn High School Principal Sean Galiher announced that 11 Penn High School students have been named National Merit Scholarship Competition Finalists.
Jayden Bell, Sydney Domal, Reagan Hoke, Anna Huber, Maya Kvaratskhelia, Evan Li, Ryan Ludwig, Joseph Radde, Aidan Sweeney, Benjamin VanderVeen and Grace Waddell earned National Merit Scholarship Competition distinction as Finalists.
Penn’s Finalists are eligible for the 7,600 National Merit Scholarship Competition scholarships that will be awarded.
More than 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 16,000 semifinalists were named, and 90 percent of those were selected as finalists.
National Merit finalists were chosen based on their academic record, extracurricular activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, honors and awards. They submitted an essay, excelled on the SAT, and were recommended by a high school official.
Since its founding, NMSC has recognized over 3.3 million students and provided some 449,000 scholarships worth over $1.8 billion. The honors awarded by NMSC to exceptionally able students are viewed as definitive marks of excellence.
PHYSICALS FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES NO LONGER AVAILABLE AT PENN
St. Joseph Health System Sports Medicine, Beacon Medical Group Sports Medicine and the South Bend Clinic notified Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation and other St. Joseph County high schools that they would not be able to continue the practice of their physicians providing school-based "on-site" pre-participation physical examinations for student-athletes.
Hearing screenings for Sophomores scheduled for Tuesday, March 2, and Wednesday, March 3
The screenings for in-person students will be conducted during study halls.
The screenings for Virtual Students will be conducted before school (7:30-8:30 a.m.) and after school (3:30-4:30 p.m.) on Tuesday, March 2, and Wednesday, March 3.

Cosmetology program available through Penn
Current Sophomores and Juniors . . .
Are you interested in a career in Cosmetology and have Penn High School cover the tuition? The Penn High School Advanced CTE CC Program is a way for high school students to earn their Cosmetology license and prepare for a career.
Cosmetology is a two-year program so if you start it as a junior, Penn will cover the entire cost as long as you are in good standing with the school. If you start as a senior, you will be responsible for covering the second year.

Peer Leadership class offers opportunities
Do you like to help others? Are you interested in teaching? Do you need to beef up your experiences for college applications?
Try Peer Leadership for an elective next year. This course is designed to give high school students the opportunity to interact with and learn about people with disabilities. Students will provide five blocks over two weeks of in-class and/or community based instruction to students with moderate and severe disabilities under the personal supervision and direction of the course instructor or classroom teaching staff.
Are you already a peer leader? We have a new opportunity for the 2021/2022 school year where Peer Leaders may work with students at the Young Adult Program located at Schmucker Middle School.
Startup Moxie Class deadline extended
The Startup Moxie Class of 2022 application deadline has been extended to Sunday, Feb., 28, at 11:59 p.m.
Startup Moxie is looking for dynamic, energetic, and curious students, both rising Juniors and Seniors from all subject areas who like to create and make stuff happen, who are willing to fail fast and fail forward, and would like to make impactful change in our community!

P-H-M seeks bus drivers
P-H-M is in need of Bus Drivers.
All drivers begin as Sub Drivers and are guaranteed four hours of work a day at a rate of $19.75/hr. Once a driver is elevated to a route driver they will continue to be guaranteed four hours of work per day. Their pay will be increased to $21.61/hr and they will have opportunities to drive field trips, and athletic events. Trip pay is $13/hr with a minimum pay on a trip being $30. After 60 days of work they will be elevated to a rate of $22.33/hr. These wages are effective 1/1/2021 and all training is provided by the Penn-Harris-Madison Transportation Department.

Virtual student free meal pick-up moving to Door K
Dates and times will remain Wednesday and Friday from 4-6 p.m.
Door K is off Jefferson next to the playground on the practice football field side.
Free Lunch!
Thanks to a USDA waiver, all meals served to students at P-H-M will be free when there is in-school learning until further notice.
Student accounts will be charged for any ala-carte sales.
Penn High School will offer pre-packaged breakfasts. Students will select pre-packaged meal components in the cafeteria.
Penn will also be offering take-home meals for students. The meals will cover the days when students are learning from home. Meals will be given out at the end of the day on Wednesday and Friday in the IMC or Door K. The package will contain three breakfast and three lunch meals. Items will be frozen if possible and bags will have heating and storage instructions.

This document outlines our Return to Learn safety protocols as it relates to arrival and dismissal procedures, passing periods, lunch and classroom instruction.
Report student COVID-19 related symptom information to Penn
If a student presents one or more COVID-19 related symptoms, this information must be communicated to the school attendance office - 258-9501.
The following list shares those symptoms.
Temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher when taken by the mouth
New onset of severe headache, especially with fever
New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing
Sore throat
Loss of taste or smell
Diarrhea, vomiting or abdominal pain
Any student with one or more COVID-19 related symptom must stay home. If the student is at school, the student must be picked up within one hour of the parent being contacted. An additional conversation will need to take place with school officials to determine the correct plan of action. The student showing symptoms of COVID-19 could be subject to a 14-day quarantine.
PTO introduction, update
The Penn PTO welcomes you to join us for the 2020-2021 school year. While this year may look diferent, the purpose of the PTO is still vital.
Over the past 3 years, the Penn PTO has provided grants to teachers, student groups, clubs, and organizations who apply during our fall grant cycle. The PTO also assists with volunteer opportunities, hosts the annual Snowball Dance, which is open to all grade levels 9-12, provides monthly teacher/staff appreciation events/recognition, and meets monthly to keep lines of communication open between parents, students, and administration. Come see what Penn PTO is about!

Penn Republican Club Collecting Teddy Bears; meeting scheduled for Friday, March 5
We will also discuss our ongoing teddy bear drive to support the Mishawaka City Police Department and the St. Joe County Police Department. Officers use these stuffed bears in domestic disputes to calm and comfort upset children. The bears provide the children with soft, warm companions during a difficult time.
If you would like to donate a new teddy bear or donate money to buy a bear, please stop by Mr. Schaetzle's Room, 241 or pass the bear on to a club member. Key Club is also helping to collect the items.
All donations must be made by Friday, March 12.

Kingsmen Community Care Club
We are so excited to be back! Our club, Kingsmen Community Care, is still happening this year.
Kingsmen Community Care is a partnership with the Center for the Homeless in South Bend.
In the past year we hosted many donation drives and hosted two events for the children that live there, a Fall Festival and a Movie Night. Although we cannot be in person for quite some time this year, we do have many exciting things planned.
Our meetings will be on an Instagram live for followers or anyone else that would like access. We then will be saving the livestream and emailing it out so that the information can be watched at your convenience. To share your email and to be put on our email list please email either ehenderson006@phm.k12.in.us or cperkins023@phm.k12.in.us or contact Mrs. Weaver with any further questions you may have. We are very excited for this year and hope you are too!

Writers' Guild meets first and third Friday of each Month
Writers' Guild meets on the first and third Friday of each month after school from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Room 239 for in-person students that day and virtually for those working from home. Penn Softball Tryouts are scheduled for Monday, March 8, from 4-6:30 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gym.
Any student-athlete who is planning to try out for Penn Softball must attend Open Gym on Tuesday, March 2, in the Auxiliary Gym from 4-6 p.m. Part of Open Gym on Tuesday, March 2, will be a mandatory pre-tryouts informational meeting.

Bittersweet Railroad Crossing Alert
Stop signs have been installed on Bittersweet Rd. (north of McKinley) at the railroad crossing. Stop signs have also been added on Cedar Trail, Birch Road, Apple Road, and Ash Rd. (County Line). Please use caution and be aware of the new stops on routes to Penn.
