The Mark of Athena By Rick Riordan
Anjana Ramachandra, LA period 1
Plot
When fighting accidently breaks out between the Greek and Roman camps for demigods, the 7 demigods of the prophecy escape on the Arogo II. After much fighting along the way against Gaea's allies, they finally land in Europe where Nico de Angelo is trapped by the giant twins, Ephialtes and Otis. However, Anabeth knows she has her own quest. She needs to avenge her mother's humiliation by retrieving the Athena Parthenos. After finding it, she tricks Arachne (who is guarding it) into weaving her own trap. Meanwhile, Jason, Percy, and Hazel fight the twins and free Nico while Leo, Hazel, and Frank defeat the eidolons. When the rest of the group comes to rescue Anabeth, a chasm to Tartarus opens up. Archacne pulls in Anabeth and Percy loyally goes with her.
Character
A tool represents Leo because he prefers dealing with machines to people. He is independent, like a tool works on its own and doesn't depend too much on other tools. Leo also is the backbone of the ship, becuase he can fix any problem or control any part of the Argo II. Sometimes he feels loney, like a "seventh wheel".
Theme
Sacrifices often have to be made to achive a bigger goal. This generalization is shown throughout the book and can represented by a spider web. Some strands of the web might fall off but in the end the web will be fine. Similarily, Percy and Anabeth were lost in Tartarus but in the end they will probably find their way out and seal the Doors of Death.
Quote
On page 74, Nemesis says, "Soon you will face a problem you cannot solve, though I could help you for a price". Later on, Leo thinks about the price they had to pay. On page 570, he thinks "he hardly dared to hope, but he might be able to build a new control disk for a certain dragon friend of his...Still the price had been too high
