Cardinal Connection
September 2019
We have had a wonderful start to the school year. Thank you for all you have done to make it a success!
This year, we are continuing focus on reading. You and your child are invited to read 40 books this school year. Last year, we had nearly 200 of our Cardinals who met that goal. This year, we hope to have even more! Research shows the very best way to become a reader is to read and read and read and read. Reading time outside of school is a lifelong habit to be created early. Challenge yourself and your family to spend 30 minutes reading together. Everyone can read their own book or even spend time reading together. Make that time a habit. You will see great outcomes by doing this.
If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher, our office (and say hello to Mrs. Lauren Graves, our new building secretary), or me.

September Specials
Art- Mrs. Vance
Welcome back to school Mallinson Cardinals and families! I am Mrs. Vance, the art teacher. We have had a great start to the 2019-2020 school year! All grade levels have been talking about their summer vacations and all the fun times they had. Their first project was called “Summer Reflections”. Each student made a pair of paper sunglasses, decorating the frames with color and patterns, then drew scenes from their summer break on the lenses.
We had lots of students who drew pictures from their vacations outside of Kansas City as well as their “stay-cations” right here at home. Once students finished the glasses, they created a self-portrait if they had time, gluing the glasses to the face.
I enjoyed hearing all about summer from your children as we are setting forth on our journey together this coming school year. Stay tuned for more amazing art from our room!
Music- Mrs. Morina (Miss Clark got married!)
What a great start of the school year! We have been jumping right into things in music class. 3rd-5th graders are reviewing everything they’ve learned in the last few years before taking our pre-test in September. 2nd grade is busy learning that sound is vibration and how sound waves enter our ears. It has been a great start and I’m so excited to see where this year takes us! We have a lot of fun activities planned and I can’t wait to get started!

PE- Coach Ross
Hello Mallinson Parents:
The specials team would like to welcome you back to the 2019 – 2020 new and exciting school year. In the physical education classes, we are starting off with team challenge games and activities for our third through fifth grade students. The goal is to familiarize our students with teambuilding concepts like offering help and asking for help to achieve success with the given task by the teacher or coach. We have talked about how to problem solve their challenges and then transfer the learned skills to other aspects of their lives. So far, all of the classes are doing well! The good news is their critical thinking skills are improving daily. As you may already know, learning to problem solve and critically think with people you don’t know very well is difficult. Especially when there are so many different thoughts and ideas.
As for our newest and most excited group of students, our second graders, they just want to play! However, I’m still trying to convince them that PE is a class and not indoor recess! But all-in-all, we are having fun and learning! Just a reminder, our PE department and the Independence school district requires our students to wear appropriate footwear for participation. Students must wear tennis shoes that either tie and/or can be secured on their feet with a strap(s). Slip-on tennis shoes are not considered as appropriate foot wear to run and play in P.E. Students who do not meet the footwear requirements will be given an alternative assignment due to the student’s safety and school liability concerns.
Thank you in advance with your help with this matter.
Respectfully,
Coach Ross
