HEAT 2 Page Layout Due Friday, October 30
Instead of having written multiple choice tests, I have given students 2 weeks with class time to work on a 2 page layout about our unit on heat. Students have the opportunity to "put themselves in the driver's seat and show me what they have learned". This assessment has lots of opportunity for creativity and developing analytical and writing skills. It gives freedom of choice and allows students to excel in an assessment arena (test) where in traditional classrooms some students might struggle. I plan on this being done at the end of every unit.
Rock Candy Lab
Students did a great job with their rock candy lab. They were able to see how heat can force sugar into a super saturated solution creating a delicious treat.
Salt: A Microscopic View
This week students looked at salt, sugar, yeast and water under the microscope. Many were surprised to see that salt is actually cubed shaped, while sugar is more irregular crystalline shapes.
Balloon Lab
We compared baking soda, baking powder and yeast. Students ran an experiment to see what each of these leavening agents needed to created a leavened product.
Future Labs: Pizza, Cream Puffs, Pie
Holiday Pie
Students will make a pie in class the week of November 16; however, for homework, they will need to make a pie by themselves sometime between November 16 and the winter break. I hope this brightens your holidays! These are pies students made last year.

Food Science Blog
I have begun posting on my blog the daily communication to students that I write on my board every day. This is a great place to look if you are interested in seeing what we are doing that day or if your student is absent.
