Reopening Update from PUSD
Middle & High School Reopening Update (February 26, 2021)
We wanted to update you on the Safety Review Process to reopen middle and high schools. We just received notification this evening at 7:15pm that our appeal has been approved by the County and will now be forwarded to the State for their final approval. The CDPH has seven business days, until March 9, to approve or deny our application.
In the meantime, San Diego County COVID case rates are falling rapidly, putting us within reach of the Red Tier (which would remove the need for the Safety Review Process altogether). Either way, we have positioned ourselves to ensure that we will be able to reopen as soon as we are able to.
Knowing that both of these factors are in play, our middle and high schools are preparing for a reopening date of March 15. Our middle and high schools will reopen with 2-days-a-week of on-campus learning and 2 days of virtual learning in A and B cohorts, utilizing the concurrent learning model. The concurrent learning model involves the teacher teaching students who are in their on campus and virtual classroom at the same time. Those students who chose to remain fully virtual can do so under this model. On Fridays all secondary students will engage in asynchronous learning. You will receive more specific information from your school sites in the upcoming week.
Additionally, we wanted to share some news on vaccinations. Starting Saturday, February 27, San Diego County will begin vaccinating K-12 teachers and staff. Due to the limited supply, they are starting first with schools and districts in areas with the highest COVID-19 rates, before expanding to more school districts. We know this news is both exciting and disappointing at the same time: exciting because educators are finally being vaccinated in San Diego, and disappointing because this is a change in the County’s initial announcement that schools that have already reopened would be vaccinated first.
While we share this disappointment, we also know that vaccination developments and supply levels are changing by the day, and we will continue to advocate for our PUSD staff to be prioritized. Board members and Superintendent Phelps have been working very hard behind the scenes with Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and SDCOE Superintendent Paul Gothold to ensure PUSD teachers are among the first to be vaccinated as was promised to districts that have already reopened. We are still hopeful this advocacy will allow us to be moved toward the front of the line. PUSD families can also help, by emphasizing the need to vaccinate our staff with our local county leaders.
In the meantime, please know that our schools have been doing everything they can to prepare for reopening and are ready to welcome your children back to school safely on March 15 (pending State approval of our appeal or San Diego County moving to the Red Tier).
