Pre K on My Way Resources
Preschool Special Education
Research has proven Integrated settings provide a challenging environment for students with disabilities. Therefore, these students learn to be more independent and acquire developmentally advanced skills. Also, they may develop friendships and a more positive self- image by having the opportunity to do what other students do.
Dispelling the Myth:
Myth: Another special education classroom is more appropriate because the teacher student ratio is better. Truth: The ratio of support in our special education classrooms is similar. That being said, in most situations, this is not an argument for a student not to be in a particular class.
Myth: Students with disabilities cannot enroll in special education classrooms if they are not toilet trained.
Truth: Students can enroll in all our special education classrooms if they are still toilet training. This is not a reason to exclude a location of service.
Myth: Students with autism cannot be placed in the general education classrooms.
Truth: Students with autism are on a spectrum of abilities and can be served in various settings.
Myth: Students with disabilities cannot start school without a physical exam form completed.
Truth: Students with disabilities cannot be held out of school due to a missing physical form. At a minimum, they must have the birth certificate, proof of residency, parent's ID, and immunization records before they are assessed.
Developing Fine Motor and Handwriting Readiness Opportunity
Back for the 2023-2024 school year! The CMSD Occupational Therapy Department would like to increase the awareness of Occupational Therapy as a resource service through the Response To Intervention process. Occupational Therapist, Jen Heinrich, is available to visit your classroom to provide consultation services regarding at-risk students with fine motor delays to provide whole group activities and strategies as part of the RTI process. The goal is to be proactive in addressing the foundational skills in early childhood grade levels so as to reduce their need for services at higher grade levels. If you would like to have a classroom visit (includes manipulatives and handouts; whole group demonstrations, consultation, and a fine motor tool kit), please click on the link below:
