MTV MOBILE HOTSPOT REQUEST
DUE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
MOBILE INTERNET HOTSPOTS
A message was sent to LCPS families on August 25, 2020 about mobile internet hotspots.
LCPS has purchased a limited quantity of mobile internet hotspots to ensure access to internet-based instruction for qualifying students during distance learning.
Here are a few things to know about requesting a mobile internet hotspot:
Cellular service must be available in the area you live from a carrier supporting LCPS. Cellular service must be available for the hotspot to work.
LCPS is not prioritizing hotspots for households that live in regions that have access to adequate internet service. Other learning options may be considered in these situations including printed learning packets or reserving spaces inside a school for families with no connectivity at home.
Requests for hotspots will be submitted to each school for consideration and processing. Schools will consider requests on the basis of socio-economic conditions or educational accommodations.
Temporary hotspots may be available for families that need to bridge a gap while working to acquire additional services, to meet the household needs.
Submitting a request does not guarantee access to a hotspot. LCPS is prioritizing the distribution of hotspots to students in grades K-12 in households with the greatest need. There is a limit of one hotspot per household as each hotspot supports up to 15 device connections. Schools will notify families if they are approved and provide a link to schedule an appointment to pick up the device at a Hardware Repair Center in early September.
The hotspots come with pre-configured internet content filtering, meeting the requirements set forth by the Children’s Internet Protection Act. The LCPS hotspots operate across several providers. However, cellular coverage is required by one of our carriers for the device to work.
Other temporary options that families may wish to consider include connectivity at all LCPS high schools and public libraries. These are temporary considerations as long term solutions are in progress.
All LCPS High Schools will have wireless connectivity in the parking lots by the start of school. Connectivity will be available 24x7, and here is a link for more information.
For families for whom internet access is not possible at their residence, provisions are being made that would allow students to utilize the school or another dedicated location with access.
All Loudoun County libraries have wireless connectivity available from the parking lot. Please see the Loudoun County Public Library website for more information.
Thank you for your continued patience and support as we adapt to the changing circumstances.
