Kindergarten
In Math students will work on teen numbers, counting to 50, comparing numbers. They will learn work with maps and globes to identify land and water features.
They will use positional words to locate things on a map in Social Studies,
First Grade
They will be working with data and comparing numbers in that data.
In STEM they will be researching various national holidays and identifying features of Earth Materials.
2nd Grade
They will be building their literacy and science skills as they engage in a study of fossils and paleontology through various informational texts.
Students will engage in a unit to understand the properties of solids and liquids and the changes they undergo.
3rd Grade
In Math, we are continuing to become fluent in our Multiplication facts,
In Science we are learning about the Human Body!
4th Grade
In January, Fourth Grade will begin a math unit on division. We will learn basic principles, different methods of dividing and how to interpret remainders, as well as solving real-world division problems.
In reading, we will begin Unit 2 of Module 2 by researching specific animals and their defense mechanisms. We will also continue to use different strategies to identify the meaning of unfamiliar words. We are learning lots of new vocabulary in this module! In science, we are also learning about animals, their survival needs and how they adapt to their environment.
In the STEM Lab, we are researching the animals in Brentwood's backyard using our camera traps and raising awareness of our local wildlife. In Social Studies, we are learning about the growth and development of North Carolina. We will study how humans and technology have impacted our state.
5th Grade
In ELA, students will continue to read about Canopy Meg and her adventures through the rainforest of Brazil. While reading this narrative nonfiction text, we will work on strengthening their reading comprehension skills. Students will continue to discuss nonfiction text structures while identifying main ideas and supporting details. Additionally, students will build upon their summary writing skills.
In Social Studies, students will understand how the physical environment dictates settlement patterns and can determine the way that people meet basic needs.
Music
In Kindergarten Music, students are learning to recognize differences in music, such as high/low sounds, fast/slow, and loud/soft.
In 1st Grade Music, students are learning to recognize pitched and unpitched instruments. Ask your student if they made a pitched or unpitched instrument in our Gingerbread Music/STEM project.
In 2nd Grade Music, students are learning to recognize different instruments based on how they make sound, focusing on string and percussion instruments. Ask your student about the 3 ways percussion instruments make sound.
In 3rd Grade Music, students are working to accurately sing 2 pitch patterns, using "so" and "mi". Ask your student to sing some so/mi patterns for you!
In 4th Grade Music, students are learning to recognize and create patterns using "ta", "ti-ti", "rest", and "tom".
In 5th Grade Music, students are continuing to practice recorder. Students also have access to a digital xylophone in the 5th Grade Music Google Classroom. Ask them to play a song for you!
