Message From the Principal
Happy Columbus Day Weekend!
At Elkins Pointe we want our students to go to college and go out into the world to explore their passions. This is why we took students to two colleges, and on the 8th-grade trip to learn more about our beautiful state of Georgia!
I was excited for our students to go to Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern Universtiy. On the AVID field trip to GA Tech, our Titans got to sit in an actual College of Chemical Engineering class. Imagine being only 13 years old and sitting in your first college lecture hall. On the 8th-grade trip, we visited the beautiful campus of Georgia Southern. 8th graders were treated to a college tour from a GSU Armstong college student named Trevor. It was a great experience for our students to meet the helpful and kind co-eds and tour this spectacular campus.
On the Georgia Trip, 8th grade Social Studies sprung to life. Our Titans went under the command of the soldiers at Old Fort Jackson! Students sat in the pews of the historic First Baptist Church in Savannah. 8th-graders also sat in vintage student desks in a one-room schoolhouse, the first public school in Savannah. We ate Chick-fil-A at the seashore and dipped our toes in the Atlantic at Tybee. 7th-grade parents, it will be your Titan's turn to do this trip next year. This trip is special because we continue to align the trip to the Georgia Studies curriculum and have added a college visit to align with our AVID school goals.
Next week it is the Roswell Youth Day Parade. I would like to see over 100 Titans come out to march with the float. Please join us on Saturday, October 13th at 9:30 am on Mimosa Blvd. Let's show all of Roswell our middle school is Smart, Happy, and Connected!
Sincerely,
Kindra L. Smith, Ed.S

BIG THANK YOU PROJECT - EPMS Service Project for the US Military - 10/19
300+ "Thank You" letters are requested from EPMS students to deployed military members this holiday season. The radio station Q100 and the Bert Show collect handwritten thank you letters each year thanking the military for protecting our country. These letters are delivered to every serviceman/woman who will spend Thanksgiving/Christmas/Etc. away from their family and friends. I think it is important for students to learn to give back to the community, so I am encouraging every student to write at least one thank you letter!
Requirements for "Thank You" Letter:
- Should be 1 paragraph with 5 or more sentences or longer.
- Encouraging words and thanks for their service to our country. Nothing negative - ONLY positive!
- Draw a color picture. Here are some ideas: American Flag, Thanksgiving scene, Holiday scene, nature, a picture of your pet, or any picture you think will show patriotism or gratitude.
- NO PERSONAL INFORMATION! First name ONLY! Students can write that they attend Elkins Pointe Middle School, but should not include their personal address or their last name for safety reasons. Many years, I have had students receive a letter back from their service member.
- Letters on lined-paper (i.e. binder paper) or copy/printer paper (white bond paper). The letters should not consist of glue/glitter/staples, any picture taped on. The letters should not be on construction paper and do not need to be placed in an envelope. All letters should be decorated with pens, colored pencils, markers, or crayons!
- Handwritten written letters. NOT typed on the computer.
- For more information about the “Big Thank You” project: http://thebertshow.com/articles/bigthankyou/
Miss Rankin has set a goal of collecting 300 letters! All letters need to be turned in by Friday, October 19th! Thank you so much for supporting my goal of teaching students the importance to give back to the community this year! Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!
Best, Ms. Missy Rankin, 6th Grade Math Teacher
