Indiana State Literacy Association

November 2018 eNewsletter

Dear Membership,

It is an honor to serve as President of the Indiana State Literacy Association for the 2018-2019 school year. I appreciate everyone's patience during this period of transition. We thank Nancy Hankee for her years of service as Executive Director. For years Nancy dedicated much time and energy to make ISLA into the amazing organization that it is today. We wish her well in retirement!

Looking forward, here are my big goals through September 2019.

  • Increase the number of members through digital communication tools and website enhancement
  • Organize an annual conference experience that will a. grow Indiana educators with their literacy practice and b. celebrate the work of Indiana literacy leaders
  • Engage educators of color through intentional partnerships and personal invitations
  • Establish a Board that represents the diversity of our learners across suburban, urban, and rural communities and within the northern, central, southern regions of our state
  • Identify ways to collaborate with Indiana Council Teachers of English and Indiana Teachers of Writing to connect more Indiana educators with professional organizations

I look forward to connecting with as many ISLA members as possible this school year. I welcome emails, phone calls, text messages, and notes through social media. I love learning with learners of all ages, from babies to our most experienced teacher leaders!

Invitation to host a Book Study

ISLA is encouraging its local councils and all Indiana schools to host a book study with Being the Change: Lessons to Teach Social Comprehension by Sara K. Ahmed.

Format is open! Here are a few ideas.

  • Meet at a coffee shop or at a restaurant that serves Indiana produced beer or wine!
  • Designate a bulletin board in a staff lounge for readers to post new learning and reflections.
  • Organize a Twitter slow chat. Post a new discussion prompt each morning over a series of days. Participants can respond to each prompt at a time of their convenience.
  • Start a Goodreads community group.
  • Host a Google Hangout. Advertise a specific time and date for participants to join.
Being the Change Book Studies

Share how you plan to share the book Being the Change within your community of practice!

Do you love to organize stuff?

Indiana State Literacy Association is looking for a Treasurer to start in January 2019. Many thanks to Fran and Mark Hewett for their years of service. No experience required.

Please contact Kristin Patrick at kristin_patrick@nobl.k12.in.us if interested.

Write for the Indiana Literacy Journal

The Indiana Literacy Journal is interested in hearing from Indiana literacy educators! Did you attend an interesting session at the 2018 Indiana Literacy Association conference and have tried out what you learned in your classroom? If so, consider telling others about it! We also welcome articles from students and/or faculty at Indiana universities who are engaged in literacy practices and/or research.

Details on submissions can be located here: http://www.indianareads.org/journal.html . All manuscripts should be submitted to Sharon Daley (shdaley@indiana.edu) by January 15, 2019.
