In School this Week...

Word Wall

The Word Wall is a great writing tool in our classroom. I do not expect the students to memorize each word wall word, but they do need to be aware that the words are on the wall, so they can use them as a reference when writing in the classroom.

There will not be new word wall words this week. Instead, we will be reviewing the words that have already been added to our word wall.

A list of spelling words will come home tomorrow in your child’s homework folder. In reading this week we are focusing on ow/ou words.

This week's spelling words are:

town, cloud, scout, owl, found, clown, trout, chowder

Shared Reading

In reading this week, we are reading the story Follow a River. We will be using a graphic organizer to help us remember facts that we read in this non-fiction book. In our reading groups this week, each group will be using our classroom iPads to recall facts from the stories we read. Some groups will create graphic organizers like webs, while other groups will create a slide show using pictures from the books they are reading. Our graphic organizers will help us build our comprehension skills during and after reading.

Our phonics focus this week is to sort words that have the ow and ou sounds in 'brown' and 'round.'

We will also review geographic words that teach us about the parts of rivers.

Everyday Math

At the end of last week, we used our classroom iPads to go on a 3D shape hunt around Titus. This week, we reviewed the names of the 3D shapes, and practiced identifying polygons and shapes with symmetry.

Our Unit 7 Math Test will be WEDNESDAY!
A review sheet came home for homework on Tuesday.
This test will assess our understanding of polygons, 3D shapes, symmetry, as well as fact families and place value.

Science - Solids, Liquids, and Gases

This week in science, we will continue our study of solids, liquids, and gases. We will discuss how you can tell if an object is a solid, a liquid, or a gas. We will also learn about the changing properties of liquids and solids.

The website has great learning activities regarding Solids, Liquids, and Gases. Check out the Science section of our computer lab links for the activities we will be practicing this week!

Writing - Sentences

When your child writes at home, remind them to have 5 STAR writing!!

1 - My sentences are written neatly and make sense.

2 - All sentences start with a capital letter.

3 - I use finger spaces between my words.

4 - I spell word wall words correctly.

5 - My sentences having ending punctuation . ? !

In the Computer Lab...

Have you checked out XtraMath at home? is a great site that offers your child individualized math fact practice. Please email me if you need your child's log-in information.

BrainPop Jr.

The Titus Home and School association has purchased a one year license for BrainPOP, which is a very interactive online source for virtually every subject and topic associated with our elementary curriculum. We are now able to access BrainPOP, BrainPOPjr, and BrainPOP Español for both home and school.

In First Grade, we use the BrainPOPjr site at several times a week. Please visit the site with your children at home and encourage them to tell you about the activities we've completed in school.
