Freshmen Convocation - Sept. 17

I get to spend an hour every few weeks with one of the grade level Advisory groups during a period we call Convocation (on early release days) and this past Thursday, I met, along with the Freshmen teachers, with the 9th grade groups. We focused on 'refueling' for the remainder of this 9 weeks: Reviewing grades, building spirit and developing leadership. It was a busy, fun but informative time. For myself, I showed the 9th grade how to calculate their grades and reviewed graduation requirements. We talked briefly about the difference between a traditional diploma and an Honors diploma and how it is important to put in the extra effort now in 9th grade. The minimum requirements to graduate from APS are (for a current 9th grader):

  • 4 units of English
  • 4 units of Math (incl. Algebra II)
  • 3 units of Science (incl. 1 life science and 1 physical science)
  • 3 units of Social Studies (incl .5 US History and .5 Government)
  • .5 units of P.E. (2 semesters x .25 each)
  • .5 units of Health
  • 6 units of electives - including foreign language, fine/visual arts, career-technical courses, or additional core subjects
  • 18 points earned over a series of 7 exams given in grades 9-11
