Summer Learning’s 2nd session starts July 12
Families still have time to take advantage of the spectacular CMSD Summer Learning Experience.
The second and final session will run from July 12 to Aug. 6. Families have until July 12 to register.
The CMSD Summer Learning Experience offers students a chance to catch up on work after a year of remote learning, get a jump on next school year or explore interests with fun activities and camps.
Summer Learning is for all students and grade levels. The hands-on, engaging style offers a preview of a new Vision for Learning the District is creating.
The program is free, including meals and transportation. K-8 students receive free shuttle service; high school students are given RTA bus tickets.
The District’s bold approach to summer has gained widespread attention. In May, NBC Nightly News offered a preview during a newscast that Lester Holt anchored from Cleveland.
To register for the CMSD Summer Learning Experience, go to ClevelandMetroSchools.org/SummerLearning or call 216-838-3675.
Enroll now for the 2021-22 school year
It is still summer, but the start of the new school year is just around the corner.
Most students will begin classes on Monday, Aug. 23. Students at year-round high schools will start Aug. 2 or 3; students at the Cleveland School of Architecture and Design and Cleveland School of Science and Medicine will return Aug. 9.
The District will hold in-person classes five days a week but will offer remote learning for families who prefer that option.
The Cleveland Metropolitan School District is well suited to meet the needs of students and families, from free high-quality preschool to Say Yes to Education tuition scholarships for graduating seniors.
In between, CMSD offers a variety of school models. The District allows families to choose the one that best fits students’ strengths and interests.
If your child is not already enrolled, register now by going to ChooseCMSD.org or calling 216-838-3675.
Note: To be eligible for Say Yes scholarships, students must be continuously enrolled in a CMSD or eligible charter high school from ninth grade until graduation and live continuously in Cleveland or other areas served by CMSD from ninth grade through graduation. For more information, go to SayYesCleveland.org.

OFCC approves state funding for construction
A state panel has approved funding for construction of three new CMSD school buildings and major renovation of another building.
The Ohio Facilities Construction Commission on July 8 approved an agreement that will allow state funding for a new Lincoln-West high school campus and replacements for two PreK-8 schools – Clark and Marion C. Seltzer.
The agreement also provides for funding renovation of Joseph M. Gallagher School.
Construction and renovation will not begin until community meetings are held, designs are complete and contracts are awarded.
Renovation of Joseph M. Gallagher is expected to start in fall of 2022, with the construction projects following in summer of 2023. The District expects to hold ribbon cuttings for the PreK-8 schools in summer of 2024 and Lincoln-West in summer of 2025.
Students will move to temporary space while work progresses.
The OFCC will also fund demolition of the existing Clark, Seltzer and Lincoln-West buildings, as well as the former sites of John F. Kennedy High School and Watterson-Lake, Robert Fulton and Fullerton schools.
The OFCC approved nearly $79.7 million for CMSD projects on July 8. The District’s share totals $37.5 million.
CMSD began a modernization campaign after the gym roof collapsed at the former East High School in October 2000.
Since then, the District and state have constructed or substantially renovated 51 buildings. A new John F. Kennedy High School and Garrett Morgan high school campus opened last school year.
The state has paid two-thirds of eligible expenses. District voters have approved two bond issues to cover the remainder.
