Types of electromagnets

Electromagnets are found in tape decks, hard drives, and door bells.

How exactly do electromagnets work?

The type of electromagnet in a doorbell is a solenoid.

In a solenoid electromagnet the coiled wire surrounds a metal piston.

The metal piston contains magnetic conductive material.

This causes it to be able to move forward or back.

When the button on the door bell is pushed, the electromagnet is pulled back and then released when the finger isn't pushing anymore. When the electromagnet is released, it hits a chime, causing the sound.
