Classroom Updates

Math

Before break, we wrapped up Unit 5 and took the Unit 5 test. This week, we will be starting Unit 6: Whole Number Operations and Number Stories. In the beginning of the unit we will be focusing on representing data and using diagrams to solve and compare number stories.

Literacy

Spelling: Starting this week, your child's spelling list will be made from their word sort list. This sort is done in class during the week, and helps to target each student at their ability. The word sort words teach children to recognize irregular letter sounds and plurals, prefixes, suffixes, root words, etc.

Writer's Workshop: We are moving right along with our opinion papers, trying to persuade Pigeon to go to bed. This week we will be adding linking words and focusing on writing catchy leads and endings.

Khan Academy

I wanted to inform you about a great learning program called Khan Academy. Parents are able to sign their child up to use this program by visiting khanacademy.org --when you sign up, you can also add me as their teacher, so I can access their account activity as well.

After completing the diagnostic test, students are able to practice math concepts (or other subject areas) at their level. This program is unique because it teaches students new concepts through video tutorials (and it's free!). The Khan Academy application is accessible for all students at school via their iPads, and we would love to be able to utilize this awesome learning tool.

Please consider signing your child up for this program to use at home and school! Don't forget to write your child's username and password in a safe place for them to have at school. I look forward to getting students started on this program!

AAPS District Expo

This Wednesday is the AAPS District Expo. The second grade classes from A2 STEAM will be there to present their Chilly Challenge project! So far, we will have Amber, Justin and Ibrahim to represent our classroom. Please be sure to sign up for a time if your child is interested in presenting--you can find the link below.
