Principal's Message
Greetings Arleta Families -
Communication is key and we have been working to ensure that communication gets out to the entire Arleta community. There are several modes of communication we will be using this year. This newsletter, our school website, the PTA website www.ArletaPTA.org and our shared Facebook page Arleta School and Families United Facebook. We continue to strengthen each of these communication modes in the hope that all Arleta families find at least one way to receive their information from the school.
Check out the Ms. Kruger Parent Communication Survey regarding my own communication with you and your students. This information will be used to help me improve my communication throughout the community. I hope you will take a moment and fill out the survey. It’s anonymous, but will give me information on how I can communicate better with families.
~With Gratitude, Diana
Counselor's Corner
I have been teaching the 1st-3rd graders the Kelso Wheel; which is a problem solving model. The foundation of the program is the distinction and understanding of big problems vs. small problems. Big problems are when they feel scared or when there is harm or danger, potential danger or they feel unsafe. Small problems are when there is no danger and they do not feel scared and the situation is NOT unsafe. When students experience a big problem, they are taught to report the problem to an adult immediately. When they experience a small problem they are asked to try two of the nine strategies from the Kelso Wheel. If the student is experiencing a small problem and has tried two strategies and they are still experiencing the problem, then they need to tell an adult.
The nine strategies to solving a small problem include: *Make a Deal * Apologize * Go to Another Game * Talk It Out (using “I” statements) * Walk Away * Share and Take Turns * Ignore It * Tell Them to Stop * Wait and Cool Off * .
Learning how to solve problems is an invaluable skill and will serve them over a lifetime. Please encourage your children to talk to you about the concepts they are learning. As always, Please feel free to call or email me with any questions at slannom@pps.net or 503-916-6330 and ask to speak with me.
Thank you,
Mrs. Lannom

Volunteer Background Check
Our school welcomes the support of parent and community volunteers!
To maintain a safe environment for students, staff and our community, Portland Public Schools requires background checks on volunteers who may have direct, unsupervised contact with students. If you have an interest in volunteering, such as helping in your student’s class or chaperoning a field trip, it only takes a minute to fill out the short application form on the PPS website. There is currently a backlog of requests, so please get your application in as soon as possible. PPS Volunteer Background Check Form
