September/October 2017
Dear Waukesha East Parents/Guardians and Students,
It’s hard to believe that it is already October! I’m very excited to share some of the things we are doing at East to build a positive and safe school community and engage our students both in and outside of the classroom.
Our school’s 2017-2018 Theory of Action focuses on three goals:
1. Building and maintaining positive student-staff relationships.
2. Providing relevant and purposeful instruction to engage all students in learning.
3. Utilizing student data to drive our teaching and learning.
We believe if we focus our time and efforts in these three areas our attendance, behavior, academics, and graduation rate will all improve.
During the months of September and October East has focused on building positive relationships and creating a sense of belonging. Teachers and students worked collaboratively to develop classroom social contracts which are posted in all classrooms. Teachers also planned and facilitated a variety of team-building activities to build community and trust in the classroom. Teachers are not only planning great things to engage students in the classroom but also outside of school. Mrs. Valde, senior competency teacher, organized a volunteering outing for our seniors to give back to community which is highlighted in our newsletter. Mrs. Kozak, abeyance coordinator, organized a field trip for students interested in pursuing a career in manufacturing. Students attended Manufacturing Day hosted by The Workforce Development Center and learned from local experts about opportunities available in the local area and how they can better plan for a stable and good paying job for the future. Later this month a representative from WCTC (Waukesha County Technical College) will be coming in to speak with our seniors about program options and the enrollment process.
Although East has many good things to celebrate, we also have identified some areas in need of attention, specifically, attendance. I want to acknowledge all of the students that arrive to school on time and attend school regularly and thank you. Our goal is to maintain 85% or higher daily attendance, and to date we have not met this goal. Attending school daily is critical to students’ success in school. Your continued support to help us meet our goal is greatly appreciated.
Planning ahead, there is an early release day scheduled for October 25, 2017, East students will dismiss at 1:15. There is no school for students October 26, 2017 and October 27, 2017. The first quarter of the school year ends on Monday, November 6, 2017. Parents please encourage your students to check their grades and make sure all assignments and assessments are completed. Grades will close on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.
As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have at 262-970-4354 or tchambers@waukesha.k12.wi.us.
Sincerely,
Tiara Chambers
Principal

Volunteer Work at Frame Park
On Friday, September 22nd, a group of Seniors from East Alternative completed volunteer work at Frame Park.
They helped set up for the annual Octoberfest celebration on the 22nd and 23rd.
As you may recall, it was beastly hot that afternoon. The first day of Autumn ironically felt like the middle of summer.
While temperatures peaked into the 90's; the students worked very hard setting up tables and benches, banners and signs
to welcome the crowds for the celebration. They worked hard, but had a wonderful time in the process.
This is regular part of the Senior experience at East. It's a way we give back to the community.
We spread good will through our good work. It's part of the Circle of Courage Philosophy in action: in this case - Generosity.
Stay tuned for more volunteer reports during this 2017-2018 school year.
Credit Program Update:
We have a highly motivated group of students in the Credit Program. Several students have made good initial progress in the online portion of their classes. Nice work!
The Credit Program provides students the opportunity to work on their classes at an accelerated pace. This allows highly motivated students to accelerate their progress and potentially finish high school before the end of the school year in June.
Excellent attendance is extremely important in the Credit Program. Students with attendance concerns have difficulty achieving consistent progress in their Plato classes. Please attend school every day unless illness prevents productive participation.

Angry Birds meets Waukesha East in full force
This year, for the 10-11 Credit Recovery program, students aren't just taking a math course. They are experiencing Angry Birds MATH! Each course, whether it is Algebra 1, Geometry or Algebra 2, is immersed in the world of gamification. Specifically in the world of the game Angry Birds. While still receiving traditional grades, students also earn XP or “experience points” which accumulate and allow them to “level up”. Each level brings with it powers and incentives such as the “standard slingshot” (ability to turn in an assignment late) or “the ice slingshot (ability to skip an assignment) to name a few. They also earn XP when they “defeat the piggies” (turn in completed work, do well on an assessment, etc) XP can be earned on a daily basis.
In addition to leveling up, each unit has a “Piggie Power Hour” the day before a summative assessment. During the Power Hour, students are challenged with problems that help them practice the skills they learned during the unit. They “face off” against the Piggies and earn Piggie Points. At the end of the Power Hour, they redeem their points for “power ups” in the game. The most coveted power up currently is “homing bird” which allows the student to use their notebook during the summative assessment. Other power ups include Piggie Scope, Piggie Quake, Wingman, etc.
