"Unlock the Treasure in Every Child" - July 25, 2022

Big picture

Welcome to the Crew!

We are excited to welcome our new Crew to the Buckhorn Creek Elementary Community!

Ms. Selina Wakefield - 3rd Grade

Ms. Selina Wakefield has been a Primary school teacher in the UK since 2008. She is from the East of England, near a place called Ely which is very famous for its Cathedral (it is often used for location shoots for movies). Prior to moving to Buckhorn Creek, Ms. Wakefield taught in two schools in the UK; the first teaching 5-7 year olds, then when I moved I initially taught 5-7 year olds again but then 4 years ago, moved to teach 9-11 year olds. She has a grown-up daughter and a small dog called Luna who lives with her sister. In her spare time, Ms. Wakefield, enjoys reading and is hoping to see lots of the US while she is here.

Ms. Kristen Leavel - 5th Grade

Ms. Kristen Leavel will begin teaching for her second year at Buckhorn Creek. She has lived in Raleigh a majority of my life and graduated from Meredith College in 2021 with a degree in Psychology and was a part of the Teaching Fellows Program. She completed her student teaching at Buckhorn Creek in 3rd grade before going to Rogers Lane Elementary to teach 3rd grade last school year. Ms. Leavel is very excited to be back at Buckhorn Creek and join the 5th grade team this year. In her free time, she enjoy spending time with family and friends and coaching club volleyball.

Ms. Kandice Nangle - Special Education

Ms. Kandice Nangle was born and raised in Haysville, Kansas and graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in Early Childhood Education. Sha holds a teaching certificate in Special Education EC-12 and General Education K-6. This will be her first year teaching in North Carolina and fifth year overall! Ms. Nangle and her family just moved from Texas to North Carolina. Her family is excited to put down some roots. Ms. Nangle's husband is in the military and his job has taken them all over the world! Their family loves to travel and explore new places together. Ms. Nangle is very excited to join the Buckhorn Creek Crew!

Safety and Carpool

This year we will require that any student being dismissed through carpool have a Buckhorn Creek Carpool tag.

We will not call students by name. Cars without a Buckhorn Creek issued Carpool tag will be required to pull forward, show ID, and we will verify that students can be released to the person picking them up. You will need to add anyone that is allowed to pick up your child to the emergency contacts during Meet the Teacher.

Please make sure you have your carpool tag or have requested additional carpool tags before the first day of school.

Please request a new or replacement carpool tag by following this link.

Anyone that will be a walker must follow a different process that must be completed In-Person. Please do NOT complete this survey. Please come to the school during one of our Forms Days.

Forms Day!!

Forms Days (register for carpool numbers, drop off medication, and drop off any remaining registration documents). Providing specific times to manage these items will allow us to support families more efficiently on Meet the Teacher Night.

August 10, 11 & 12 from 9am-12pm

***Please note, your carpool number from last school year will still be valid. You do not need to get a new number. If you are in need of a replacement tag, please stop in the front office

Stock the House!

ITEMS we really need!!

  • 1 Shower Curtain
  • 1 set Shower curtain rings
  • Trash Cans - 1 large & 1 small
  • Vacuum
  • 2 Brooms
  • 1 set of silverware

We are excited to expand our global connections once again this coming school year as we welcome two new teachers to our Crew from the UK. Mr. Jack Mutton will join our 2nd Grade team and Ms. Selena Wakefield will be joining our 3rd Grade team. We are expecting them both to arrive at the end of July.

As they begin planning their moves, we are looking for ways to help them get established. Like our other teachers from abroad, they will arrive with just 2 simple suitcases. Thus, we want to provide as much support as possible. If you happen to have an extra set of pots and pans, dishes, silverware, or any other kitchen items in your house that you no longer need, please drop it off to the Buckhorn Creek office. We will also be looking for any living room furniture, dressers, etc.

We have some items from left from past teachers that have moved back to the UK, but not nearly enough to stock two apartments.

Please follow this link to list the item you are able to donate (this will help ensure we don't end up with 50 of the same thing).

Thank you all in advance for your support!
