OPEN HOUSE...PANDEMIC STYLE
Thursday, March 4
Mathews Families,
While Open House is traditionally a night when we get to join your children as they share all the wonderful things they are doing in our classrooms, this year will look a bit different.
March 4th is our open house event, and we are using a different format for our students to share with you all they have been working on here at school/or at home.
In addition, one of the things we enjoy most about Open House is having the opportunity to see and visit with you, our families.
For this reason, our team will hold a brief question and answer session via zoom.
Kinder and First will be from 6:00 PM to 6:20 PM,
Second and Third will be from 6:20 PM to 6:40 PM,
Fourth and Fifth will be from 6:40 PM to 7:00 PM.
These meetings are for us to answer any questions you may have regarding the last nine weeks of school. Joining this session is completely optional, and is truly a time for us to support, clarify, or answer any questions you may have.
Your classroom teacher will share more information with you about what your child will be sharing with you that evening, as well as the zoom link if you would like to join in and ask any questions.
We look forward to seeing you then.
PTA GENERAL MEETING VIA ZOOM
MARK YOUR CALENDAR 3/15:
The second general meeting of the Mathews Elementary PTA for school year 2020-2021 will be held Monday, March 15, 2021 at 7:00 pm.
Topics to discuss include budget amendments, PTA events remaining for this school year (Book Fair, Spirit Nights, etc.), Principal's Report, and the 2021-2022 Mathews PTA Board.
The March 15, 2021 meeting will be held virtually via Zoom. In order to attend this meeting, you must register by March 11, 2021.
Due to the difficulties of COVID-19, Texas PTA has approved a one-time extension of the term of office by one year in the same position with membership approval. A majority of our Executive Board is willing to return in their same position next year and has recommended that the extension of term be put before the general membership. Therefore, this item will be discussed and voted on at the meeting on March 15, 2021.

COVID PROTOCOL UPDATES
As always we will continue to practice social distancing in class, halls, and on our bus. We will continue to practice handwashing and wearing our masks. Desk partitions are in place between desks as well. Thorough cleaning and disinfecting also contributes to our Face to Face school environment to be a safe place to be. To date we have not had a student transmit the Covid-19 virus at school to another student.
In regards to quarantining during the second semester we will be looking at the following protocols in determining which students need to be quarantined; rather than the entire class:
Changes Regarding Quarantine
The close contact definition will change to allow those who are ‘properly masking’ to avoid being sent out on quarantine… proper masking is defined as wearing a multi-layer face covering (layers that can be pulled apart – so not gaiters that are one layer, one-layer masks, etc.) that fits around the nose / chin. For more information on the safest masks for your child to wear:
CDC guidance: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/cloth-face-cover-guidance.html
The quarantine period for close contacts will be revised – meaning that a student/staff member who is identified as a close contact will only have to stay out for 10 days instead of 14. The gold standard is still 14 days, but in an effort to get kids back in class and staff back to work, CDC is allowing the 10-day return. At the 10 day mark the person must be symptom free before they can return and continue to monitor for symptoms through day 14; if they develop symptoms, they will remain on quarantine.
This message includes updates on the COVID-19 response from CDC. The COVID-19 Outbreak is a rapidly evolving situation and information will be updated as it becomes available.
