A Message from the Principal
Hello Jags,
On Monday, October 31st, our SMS staff will be hard at work while our students enjoy a day off. Our PTO has been working to TREAT our staff with a night off from preparing dinner. Please consider sponsoring a pizza and/or side for $5 or less. It's a cash, venmo or zelle only event and all donation amounts are appreciated. Click here for more information. It's not too late to join our PTO. Please contact Audrey Du, PTO President, at audreydu@yahoo.com to join. Don't forget it is also a great time to purchase your SMS Jaguar Personalized Yard Signs. Choose from Athletics, Fine Arts, Clubs and more. Click here to order your Yard Sign now!
It was great seeing so many parents, students and staff members at some of the events last week. The counselors hosted the first Parent U session of the year, our Theatre Department performed their One Act Play "Snow Angel," and our 8A Football team won the division championship when they defeated the First Colony Bobcats 36-16 last week! Congratulations to Coach Andrews, Coach Figenshaw and all of the students on an incredible season! The team showed grit & determination and they have represented Sartartia Middle School well.
This week is Red Ribbon Week and our PALS have put together a series of events and lessons to help students "Celebrate Life. Live Drug Free." We are also wrapping up Progress Report #3 this Friday and will be running an activity schedule for our annual student vs. staff volleyball game. Tickets will go on sale to all grades this Thursday for $5 and students must be cleared from the fines list to purchase a ticket (fines for cell phones, missing athletic equipment, overdue library books, missing textbooks). We are looking forward to a fun week!
Sincerely,
Cholly Oglesby
Principal

Safety Updates & Reminders
Discord
An emerging national concern is the inappropriate use of the social media by children/students. This problem has the potential to be harmful, and we ask your support in assisting us with this challenge. We want to make you aware of some concerns we have been dealing with regarding the social media/messaging platform, Discord.
Across the nation, schools have seen an increase in negative student behavior as a result of messages written using electronic technology, posted to popular social media websites. Many of the social media websites contain instant messaging components that allow students to chat with other students and post statements that ordinarily would not be said in a face-to-face conversation.
Please know that SMS and/or teachers and SMS organizations are not associated with any Discord servers, and any group that your child is in for "school" is not monitored by teachers or administrators. There are offensive and vulgar things being said on Discord on many servers.
We encourage you to talk to your child about the potential danger. Ask if they have an account on any social media website. If your child is using such a site with your permission, you may want to review his or her profile to ensure that no personal and identifiable information has been posted. Please see the "What Parents & Carers Need to Know about Discord" below www.nationalonlinesafety.com.
We also encourage you to establish rules and guidelines to ensure the safety of your child while on the internet. Be sure to check out some of the resources and webinars for parents through FBISD's Whole Child Health Initiative.
Bicycle Safety Tips
We encourage you to speak with your child about the importance of staying safe on their route to and from school. Simple reminders are often the most effective and these tips are applicable at any time of day. Please remind your child of the following:
- Wear a helmet when riding a bicycle
- Add a light or reflector on bicycles
- Cyclists must obey motor vehicle laws including yielding to pedestrians, stopping for stop signs, signaling turns and traveling with the flow of traffic
- Stop and look both ways before crossing an intersection
- Always walk a bicycle across an intersection
- Stay on the sidewalk rather than riding or walking in a public street whenever possible
- Cross at a crosswalk or intersection as opposed to mid-block
- Always look for moving vehicles
As we approach the time change on November 6, the morning commute for our student walkers and cyclists has been increasingly dark outside so please take extra precaution. Following the time change on November 6, our evenings will get darker sooner. If your child stays at school for extracurricular activities, please share this helpful information with them so they are safe coming home.
One Chip Challenge
The "One Chip Challenge" is causing safety and security concerns for schools across the nation as several students have been hospitalized after participating. These extremely hot chips are being brought to school as part of a social media 'challenge' encouraging other students to eat one.
We ask that you do not allow your students to bring the chips to school and we encourage our parents and guardians to speak with their children about the dangers of participating in this and other potentially harmful internet challenges.
