Comments:
Good day for the boy’s team today. Times are not as fast as last week in Joplin, however, the course conditions were had degraded a lot by the time the boys race was run as the last race of the meet. We were led again today by sophomore Cody Loganbill who ran sub-18 for the second meet in a row and just missed out on a top 25 medal finish. Freshman Jonas Staples, who didn’t race last week, was a welcome return to the line up today. Today was the first time since our first race of the season where we had our full varsity team running. However, we still haven’t performed like we are capable of all on the same day just yet. My goal for the team was a top 10 finish and despite not having our best runs from all team members today we were very close to that goal. Each time out, we are seeing the ups and downs (and the potential) of this young team, and once we get it together on the same day we are going to really surprise some other teams.

Comments:
Lots to be really happy about today with the performance of these boys. First, senior Hayden Miller ran a great race and I am confident the hard work in practice will continue to pay off and he’s going to really start pushing the back end of the varsity pack going forward with the rest of the season. And, our freshman boys Micah, Ethan, and Aidan all ran great season best improvements and on a tough course that was slick to race on today. The times that we are putting out on our JV team are better than a year ago and it’s really exciting how young so many of these boys are. I expect continued improvements as we enter the second half of our season.

Comments:
Dominating performance today from these girls. This was a race last year we wanted to win but came up short, so it felt good to get it today and accomplish that goal. Riley Hiebert ran conservative early and took over in the second half of the race for a comfortable 10 second win today. Freshman newcomer Phoebe Fletcher continues to impress and improve every week and Maya Pattison continues to bounce back from early season illness and ran her best race of the season as well today. We have had two big wins in a row now with Stampede last week and Rim Rock this week. We will look to keep the ball rolling next week as well as we enter a couple of easier weeks of racing where we can work on fine tuning some things.

Comments:
We have been talking about our depth for a while now and how impressive it is, but for all that talk, today was the first time all season we actually had our true JV 8-14 runners in the same race, and they did not disappoint. The JV race at Rim Rock is a combination of the blue and crimson divisions so there are many schools that are much larger than us in the race, but that didn’t bother us at all. We placed 5 girls in the top 25 earning medals. Leading the way was freshman Liz Mueting. Stella Whalen had the most impressive finish on the day as she moved from 12th to 5th place in the last 700 meters! The back of our JV team all improved big today narrowing the gap between our 8 and 14 runners and making us more competitive overall. Of everything that happened this weekend at Rim Rock, I think the win in this race was the biggest accomplishment for our program. The coaches couldn’t be happier or more proud of the girls on this team. I know all of these girls are going to continue to work hard everyday and push for the varsity spots that are certainly in reach.

These girls had a much tougher task than the rest of the team having to race on Friday night when the heat index was near 100° at the start of the race and it was very humid. Despite that most either ran new season best times or were very close to those times tonight. Junior Harleigh Moore was our only medal winner placing in the top 25. A couple of freshman girls followed to give us our top 3. Abby Keltner ran her second race of the season after taking a couple meets off due to injury and managed a season best time that I am sure she will continue to improve on now that she’s racing again. I am excited to get these girls a race with cooler temperatures next week to give them the same opportunities as everyone else had on Saturday and I think we are going to get that next week.
Up Next:
We will race Thursday at the Council Grove Invitational. This is another opportunity for us to race out west and give us some comparative data against some runners that race even further west. The course is largely flat and we should be able to drop some fairly fast times there.
Varsity Volleyball - Coach Cleveland
The varsity volleyball team took 3rd place at the Tonganoxie Tournament on Saturday. Overall, it was a great day for the lady cards! Starting their morning in pool play, the cards went 3-1. With wins over Topeka High, Turner, and Ottawa. Their one loss of the morning was to a tough Shawnee Mission NW team. The last match of pool play was quite the rollercoaster ride with Ottawa! Ottawa took the first set of the match. Unfortunately, some serve and unforced errors got the best of the Cardinals. With a short break and switch of sides, the girls regained focus and rallied in the second set. The cardinal’s defense was just too much for the cyclones. Leading the way offensively was senior Keagan Shockley! With determination and grit, she put away several attacks and helped her team take set two 25-18. Set three was another nail-biter for both teams. The Cardinals came out hot with a solid eight point lead. On our side of the net, the defense and offense looked solid. However, the cards struggled to get out of one rotation. Throughout the rest of the match there were ties, but the cardinals rallied to hold off the cyclones. The Cardinals took the victory 25-23.
Moving on to the first match of bracket play the Cards competed against Great Bend. First set of the match was awesome! The Cardinal offense was extra spicy! No matter where the ball was set, the front line put the ball away! The first set was dominated by the cards, 25-13. Unfortunately, the second set didn’t go exactly as planned. We struggled communicating in serve receive and our defense was not as solid. The score of the second set was 18-25. The start of the third set was very similar to our finish in the second. The girls battled throughout the entire match and tied the score several times. We just couldn’t get over the hump and take the lead. The end result of the match was unfortunate. The girls lost 23-25.
Last match of the day for the Cards was against Junction City for 3rd place. The start of the first set, our serve receive busted their butts to get the job done for our offense. Senior Delaney Franklin took control in the back court, which kept the ball in system for the cards. Junior Lauren Mitchell had several key attacks during the match. Overall, her attacking was consistent the entire day. Defensively, sophomore Harper Schreiner was a beast in the back court! Overall, it was a dominant match for the cards!
The entire tournament was a success! As their coach, I’m very proud of the girls! Their work ethic was top notch! It’s hard to believe that we are half-way through our season! Our record is currently 12-8. We have some big matches ahead of us. There is no doubt in my mind that these girls will rally all the way to the end!!! The team is back at home tonight for a league dual vs. Bonner Springs.
JV Volleyball - Coach Sadler
The JV Lady Cards have had many exciting volleyball games the last few days.
Thursday night we played against Basehor, Baldwin, and Bonner. The girls beat Basehor and Baldwin handily, but fell short to Bonner. Overall it was a great night of volleyball.
We were in Ottawa Saturday, Sept. 28th and took 4th place. The Lady Cards went undefeated against Emporia, Ft. Scott, and Piper. The girls played incredible against Blue Valley Northwest in their first game. Almost every play was incredible with lots of hustle. Freshman Sophie Sanchez joined the JV Saturday and contributed so much with her blocking. During the game against Paola the JV had 10 serving aces in the first set.
Monday night the Cards hosted at quad at EHS against Baldwin, Tongie, and Piper. The Lady Cards came out victorious in all three matches. Many smart decisions were made as a team. Freshman Audrey Shain played the back row incredibly well on Saturday and Monday. The cards take on Bonner tonight at home. See you there!
9th grade volleyball - Coach Miller
On Monday, September 30th, the Freshmen Lady Cardinals traveled to Tongie to play in their first quad. Their first match was a win against Piper, 25-22 and 25-23. Bree Gabel's serving was ON FIRE! She was very consistent and had multiple ace serves. The second match was against Tongie. The first set win, 25-18, was very competitive and fun to watch. Kambry Shockley and Josie Pickett were back at it with their left handed domination. And they couldn't make it happen without some awesome passing from Sophia Sanchez on defensive digs and serve receive. The second set started rough. At one point the Lady Cards were down 1-12, but when Makenzie Graves got up to serve she served 8 in a row to get them back in the game. Brooklyn Thorn had some awesome saves at the net and the team worked hard with great communication and drive to pull out a second set win, 25-23. Moving on to the last match of the evening, the girls were tired, but they were not ready to stop. They pushed through with some amazing serves from Addie Woods and Kambry Shockley. Josie Pickett picked up some shocking kills and Bree Gabel played phenomenal defense. The two set scores were 25-13 and 25-15.
What a fun night adding some Ws to the list!! On to the next! Go Cards!
Varsity Football - Coach Hayden
The Eudora Cardinal football team took on the Baldwin Bulldogs on Friday in a game that was altered several times due to weather. The game was played at 5:00pm, there was a weather delay, and the game was cut short due to weather as well. Through it all, the team stayed the course and came out with the win.
The Cardinals started out slow and made plenty of mistakes in this game, but they came out after halftime with a renewed focus and energy. The game was 7-12 at halftime in favor of the Bulldogs. This was a complete team effort as offense, defense, and special teams all made timely plays when it mattered most.
The special teams had a good night, with senior kicker Caden Willits being 100% from PAT, and also having 3 touchbacks on the kickoff team. Junior Alex Allison blocked a punt in a big part of the game as well. The special teams player of the week is senior Kaden Hartwell, for his excellent punt team coverage. Kaden gave great effort and was able to stop a return from happening.
Offensively the Cardinals only had 36 plays all game, but ended with 260 yards of offense. This is an average of 7.3 yards a play. In the passing game, junior quarterback Zeke Reazin was 3 of 7 for 46 yards. Sophomore receiver Silas Etter had two receptions for 16 yards while junior Cael Lynch had one reception for 30 yards. On the ground, Cael Lynch had 46 yards rushing and one touchdown on six attempts. Zeke Reazin had 23 yards and one touchdown while freshman running back Octavius Lyles added 42 yards on seven carries. The offensive player of the game goes to sophomore Brayden Beerbower, who had 107 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. Brayden’s longest touchdown went for 66 yards. The team is starting to pick things up offensively, and only needs 7 more points to break their point total from all last season.
Defensively, the Cardinals played well all night. Besides the short field Baldwin was given after a failed 4th down attempt, Baldwin struggled to move the ball. The other score was on a missed coverage assignment, but the corner made up for that mistake later in the game. The defensive backs were great in this game, only allowing 68 yards passing on 20 attempts and intercepting the ball twice. The Cardinals were led again in tackling by Cael Lynch, who had 15 total tackles. Others who contributed to the tackling total- Brayden Beerbower(9), senior Jake Boucher (14), junior Darrell Higgins (8), Alex Allison (12), senior Adam Monroe (6), Adam also had an interception. The players of the game defensively are seniors Matt Evans and Noah Watkins. Matt played great coverage all night and was also active in the run game. Noah made up for his coverage mistake by picking off the very same pass route he was beat on earlier and taking it 86 yards for a score.
The cardinals take on a very good Louisburg team this Friday in Louisburg. It should be a very physical back and forth game. We hope to see everyone there.
Sub Varsity Football - Coach Hammerschmidt
9-30-19 @Baldwin
The Freshman/Sophomore team traveled to Baldwin and battled a more experienced and varsity laden Bulldog roster, falling 22-40. After a halftime score of 8-21, the Cardinals fought back closing the gap to 16-21 late in the third quarter, but turnovers plagued the Cards creating short fields for three of the Bulldogs scores. The Cards offense was led by freshman running back Micah Barron who rushed for two long touchdowns and freshman Kale Hammerschmidt who rushed for one touchdown. In the passing game, Hammerschmidt connected multiple times with freshman Jaiden Bender and Jaden Hamm, including a 70-yard strike to Bender. Hamm also caught passes in the end zone on two conversions. Up front the Cards were challenged by an aggressive Baldwin defensive front, but frehsman Eythen Moore, sophomore Tyler Neis, sophomore Dakota Copeland, freshman Brandon Gregory and sophomoreWaylon Hutton stepped up, especially in the second half. The defense was led by strong efforts from Barron, freshman Hunter Bradshaw, sophomore Ben Suber, Hammerschmidt and Tyler Neis. Freshman Noah Van Foeken had multiple tackles in run support, including two solo tackles. On special teams, freshman Xavier Jiminez blocked a Bulldog PAT. In spite of the more experienced opponent, the kids responded well and can take pride in their capabilities to compete in tough matchups going forward.
9-26-19 @Piper
The Freshman/Sophomore football team secured a late victory over Piper on Thursday, 38-34. The game was back and forth but the Cardinals were more effective converting on their point-after attempts and getting key stops on defense. The offensive production was balanced with numerous kids contributing. Freshmaen Cole Parker, Jaiden Bender, Kale Hammerschmidt, Xavier Jimenez, Micah Barron and Hunter Bradshaw all effectively produced in the pass and run game. On the offensive line freshman Eythen Moore, sophomores Waylon Hutton and Dakota Copeland demonstrated grit against a good Piper defensive front. Defensively the Cardinals secondary was busy all game but got help from an aggressive Eudora front line. Dakota Copeland stripped a fumble away from the Piper running back in the 3rd quarter and nearly scored after rumbling down the sideline for 30 yards. Xavier Jimenez, Bender, Parker, Hammerschmidt, and Bradshaw secured the secondary while freshman Christian Cox, Copeland, and Barron pestered Pipers QB's, never allowing them to get comfortable. After a late 40 yard touchdown pass from Parker to Hammerschmidt, Brandon Warner jumped on a fumbled kick-off by Piper, not allowing them another chance on offense. Great win, very pleased with how the kids competed and never quit on themselves or each other.
Varsity Soccer - Coach Erpelding
EHS @Atchison
On Tuesday we traveled to Atchison and came away with a very sluggish 3-2 win. We got up 2-0 in the first 7 or 8 minutes and we could see some of the guys switch off and start thinking about Baldwin on Thursday. From that point, it was a real struggle to get the boys to really engage in the game. We could see they felt that we were better and could do just enough to get away with a win. We could also tell that it looked like we had played a game the day before as well. Junior Jace McCormick, junior Jack Kleineweber, and senior Caden Willits scored the goals for us and Caden and junior Dylan Meier had the assists. This was Jacks's first goal of his Varsity career.
EHS @Baldwin
Going to Baldwin and winning at Baldwin is not an easy task ever. I mean it has been nine years since one of my teams has won at Baldwin. Well, guess what people that 9 year wait is over!!!!!! We came away with a huge 4-3 win last night at Baldwin!!! I can't express how exciting this is and how huge this is for our program! All I can really say is that it was awesome and the boys are on cloud 9!
Now back to reality. We have a huge one on Monday at home against Spring Hill. If we don't come out and give everything we have and get the W, then what we accomplished last night doesn't mean as much because our goal of winning league pretty much disappears. That is the reality of it. But we will enjoy the win over Baldwin at Baldwin for a day or so! We talked before the game about the difference between last year's team and this year's team. The difference is that we had something to prove. I told the boys we have something to prove not only to everybody outside the family but to our family and to ourselves every single time we touch the field. The boys proved last night why we are not the old Eudora! I'm telling you it does not matter what type of team Baldwin puts on the field. To win at their place is huge! I have been fortunate enough to put some really really good teams on the field at their place and we have either lost or tied. It is a really tough place to play. It just is. So for these boys to come away with a win is outstanding!! Outstanding enough that Mr. Abel did an awesome fist pump when he came and talked to me and to congratulate the boys.
We got on the board first when junior Keaton Herron crossed the ball and junior Alex Kooken found Jace on the back post and Jace hit a beauty into the back of the net! This is Jace's third straight game of scoring and scoring the first goal of the game!! Junior Colby Lawhorn got number two for us by crashing the goal and the keeper mishandled the ball. Colby was right there and basically dribbled the ball into the net! Number three came when Jace got hammered in the box and earned a PK. Dylan calmly stepped up and scored. I honestly don't know how calmly he did it cause I didn't watch. We are up 3-0 at Baldwin!!!! Unfortunately, we gave one back about two minutes after the PK. They got a corner and we misjudged the ball and they calmly headed the open shot away. They got another one back in the second half to make it 3-2 on another back-post header. After that, we really controlled the game. We got a set piece at the very top of the box. Keaton stepped up and kept his shot low and hard and put it in the back of the net to make 4-2. From then on we kept the pressure up and did not give them many chances. But we created several. We just didn't put the chances away. They got another one back again on a set piece on the back post with 54 seconds to go. In the last 54 seconds they didn't get another chance.
This was a huge win for the boys and our program!!
Spring Hill @EHS
For those of you that were at the game last night, I tell you what, our boys did not disappoint! Beating Spring Hill 2-1 in overtime for the first time in program history was awesome!! Our boys played their tails off from the beginning whistle to junior Kale Breedloves game winning goal! Us coaches could not be more proud of the boys. Well maybe in a couple of weeks if we are able to win a couple of things, but leading up to this game we couldn't be.
We got down 0-1 within the first three minutes of the game. Honestly, I believe it woke our guys up. Because from then on we went right at them. We did not put our heads down at all and were able to get the game tied when sophomore Camden Ridinger found junior Keaton Herron on a great diagonal ball from left to right. Keaton got on it and beat his defender and buried his shot side netting. We created several chances after that just were a little unlucky.
In the second half, we had the wind and we took advantage of it. We asked our guys to crack it from 30-40 in. Junior Jace McCormick did this two or three times just barely missing on them all and the keeper making a great save to keep the score tied at 1. Junior Alex Kooken was relentless in the attack along with junior Colby Lawhorn. They just kept putting pressure on their backline and creating turnovers. Our middle with Keaton, senior Caden Willits, Kale, Camden and junior Jack Kleineweber, was probably the best we have played all year. They didn't allow Spring Hill to do what they wanted to and it frustrated them. Our backline was outstanding!! Senior Brant Arnold, juniors Isaac Lewis, Daniel Grosdidier, and Dylan Meier seriously were fantastic. They read the game really well and were cutting off angles and clearing anything threatening at all. Will said after the game he got bored at times but he was ready when called on. We really like it when are keepers are bored.
We got the win about 5 minutes into overtime. We pushed a deep ball through and Caden chucked it into the box. We finally got on the end of one of the throws when Kale flicked it on. The ball headed towards Alex and Alex tried to shoot. The ball came back to Kale off a slight touch from Alex. That's when Kale volleyed the game winner home!
It really was a really cool scene to watch our boys celebrate after a huge win!
We are playing at home again in another league matchup on Thursday when Bonner Springs comes to town. JV 430 Varsity at 6.
It was also the first time I believe that JV beat Spring Hill! A program sweep over a traditionally solid program!
JV Soccer - Coach Mathern
EHS @ Atchison
JV soccer played Atchison on Tuesday the 24th of September. This game was very slow and we had just played the day before with only a couple of subs and you could tell the boys were feeling it. All though we were a little sluggish we did what we wanted and controlled most of the game. We attacked from our wings and used our speed to blow by their backline. EHS goes home with a 2-1 win.
EHS @Baldwin
On Thursday, the 26th, we traveled to Baldwin in our 3rd game of the week and you could tell it was our third game. The team lacked energy and communication was not there. There was never a question of effort though and that is the key thing moving forward. We are going to have nights that we just don't have it and that it okay. We have a young JV team and to not give up is a huge step for the program and means a lot to us coaches. We ended up losing the Baldwin game 1-5.
Spring Hill @EHS
Last night the JV soccer team played Spring Hill and we dominated the game. In the first half, we had some minor issues with our shape and how we wanted to rotate in the middle of the field. Despite that, Spring Hill wasn't threatening to us. We controlled the first half and kept the score 0-0. At half time, I talked to the boys about rotating in the middle and making sure we kept our shape. I also asked the boys to be more physical and make sure Spring Hill knew it was going to be tough to get a goal against us.
After halftime, Spring Hill came out with more energy than us and had a couple of good looks at goal. Junior keeper Cooper Smith made some fantastic saves and kept us in it. After a couple of scares, I think we settled down and got our feet back under us. We started to play more aggressively and used the wind to our advantage. We scored our first goal off of a corner kick that was cleared back out to junior Caleb Young and was headed into the back of the net by freshman Parker Hula. After our first goal, we kept the pressure up and kept crossing the ball into the box and eventually got a handball call for a PK. Our captain, junior Brenton Ormsby, stepped up and hammered it home. I would like to praise our outside backs, sophomore Garret Shoemaker and junior Jarod Papke for pushing high up the field and not letting their midfield get comfortable. I thought this was the best complete game for JV thus far in the season and we are super proud of the boys, EHS takes the victory 2-0
