Social Studies Weekly
Year 5 Volume 10 ~ October 30, 2018
When looking at data from the M/C questions, try looking to see what skills/vocabulary the students may be struggling with. Last week, two teachers discussed that students really struggle with understanding the word "influence". Students get how a person can influence another person. But, they have more difficulty with seeing how events/ideas/things can influence other events/ideas/things/people.
And, as usual, students are struggling with maps/charts/graphs. So, think about how you can help students build the skills needed to interpret and analyze them.
Introduction to War Strategy (11-13)
War. Perhaps nothing strikes curiosity more than this oft-misunderstood socio-political act. Indeed, it dominates our media, from film to video games, and is typically misused in trite sayings and aphorisms. In this intensive one-hour seminar, you will learn new paradigms for discussing and analyzing war with your students, as well as numerous resources that you can use immediately in your classes. Additionally, you will gain insight and materials for discussing the trauma of war, ranging from the grief of Achilles to the war neurosis and shell shock of the First World War, to the PTSD of contemporary combat. All Social Studies faculty are welcome and encouraged to attend.

And another FYI- Tommy Key shared a site he happened upon for the New Deal. It is awesome!
Final FYI- Leigh Humprey shared the Boll Weevil song she heard when she was little. It ties into the Great Migration, Harlem Renaissance, and devastation to the cotton industry in the 1920s.
If you attended the RC Day PD, please be sure to register and evaluate so you can get your CEUs.
Hot off the presses, thanks to Lee Miller, here is an article with questions about the Constitutional topic of the day!
Message from Melissa
You know what, you all are AWESOME. Seriously!
It has come to my attention that some of you are worried about changing the wording in the M/C Bank Questions that have been written. Don't worry. If there are some changes you wish to make that is fine. My only word of caution is to not modify the text so much that it moves away from the goal of the objective.
Writing the questions is really difficult and mind-numbing. The writers often mention when we look at a question the 2nd or 3rd time they have more clarity. The questions are by no means perfect. If you find a big problem with a question, please let me know. It can be adjusted. Amanda Blackburn let the AM1 team know about a question from Unit 2. We looked at it and changed it to make it better. (Thanks Amanda!)
If you or a small group at your school want to have more one-one time with me to examine assignments or assessments or write questions, let me know.
Have an amazing week.
Melissa
