K-2 Counseling
with Mrs. Triano
Happy Fall!
Dear K-2 Families,
It has been a busy first two months of school, getting back into routine and getting to know all of your wonderful children. I enjoy seeing their smiling faces at arrival every morning. As the holidays quickly approach I wanted to share some of the activities we have been doing during our SEL classroom activities.
Meet Z
This is Z. Z is the “mascot” of our SEL activities and is featured prominently in all our story books. Z is an alien who crash landed from outer space into a classroom, and he learns over the stories how to be a good friend, and other critical skills. Z comes with me to every SEL lesson and the students love seeing him.
Focus Themes
Most of our lessons begin with a story that incorporates Z and the friends he has made in the classroom. Each story focuses on the core themes of our Sanford Harmony curriculum. We are working on Unit 1 which highlights diversity and inclusion.
Supplemental Activities
Following each story, students have the opportunity to share their feelings and connect what they know to the story. Our first three stories highlight commonalities and differences among people and why both are important components of friendship. The students are able to identify characteristics of a good friend.
For Parents
Please click the Sanford Harmony title above to visit their website for more information on the SEL curriculum. It focuses on 5 core themes; diversity and inclusion, empathy and critical thinking, communication, problem solving and peer relationships. Our goal these past two months has been to develop an attitude of inclusion and to discover and appreciate commonalities and diversity. Home activities to reinforce these skills can be found here: https://online.harmonysel.org/prek-k_unit-1_h-s-home-activities/

"My Turkey Friend"
Grades 1 and 2 made "Turkey Friends" to celebrate Thanksgiving...each feather represents a quality they feel is important for a friend to have.
"Candy Corn Feelings"
To celebrate Halloween, students created Candy Corn Feelings puzzles. Each student listened to a statement and then made inferences connecting a facial expression and an emotion to the feelings words.
Understanding Gratitude
Kindergarten learned the concept of gratitude. They shared what they are thankful for on their gratitude turkeys. Most were thankful for family, friends and a quite a few said pumpkin pie!
