The Hungate Echo

Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Summer Term 1 - Issue 1

A word from Mr Broom.

We've had a super first week back after the Easter holidays. It's just a shame this beautiful weather didn't arrive a week or two earlier. Anyway, from talking to many of the children, they seem to have had a super break.

It's been a busy week in school with pupil progress meetings taking place to look at where our children are and what the next steps need to be. I must say I've been so impressed with the progress our children are making, particularly in Mathematics in Key Stage 2 and in Writing in Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage. There's a real buzz to the learning at Sherburn Hungate and I'm looking forward to some good outcomes at the end of the year.

We began learning our first 'School Will Rock You' song on Wednesday. The Queen musical is our end of year performance this year and I've been putting the finishing touches to the script. As soon as SATs are out of the way, Miss Horner and myself will be sharing the script with the children in readiness for auditions for the many parts on offer.

I'd like to finish by saying a thank you to Mr Wooffindin on his first week with us. Mr Wooffindin has completed many jobs around school as well as leading some super PE sessions in Nursery, clearing out the Key Stage 1 sandpit and engaging Castleford Tigers in some excellent rugby coaching for Year 3 and Year 4.

Next week, we look forward to our Friends of Hungate meeting on Monday night. I'm out quite a bit next week, visiting the Academies Show in London and then attending the Headteacher's Induction in Northallerton. I hope you have a great week ahead.

Football Success

On Thursday afternoon in the sweltering heat, our talented footballers from Year 5 and 6 took to the field for a friendly against Barkston Ash. It's worth mentioning that the opponents (inter-schools national finalists this year) put 11 past us last time out. Not this time! After 15 minutes, our boys and girls found themselves 1-0 up, and dominating the game. Unfortunately, lady luck wasn't on our side and we rattled the post twice more before a lucky break from Barkston gave them an equaliser.

In the second half, we were up hill and the heat started to take its toll. The game finished 5-1 to the visitors but the improvement in our game was evident by all. The scoreline flattered our visitors who knew they had been in a game!

Congratulations to Toby our 'Man of the Match' too!

Sun Protection Very Important

Today and yesterday have been our hottest days of the academic year so far and it's really important that your child is protected from the sun. Please ensure you provide them with a sun hat and apply suncream before school on hot days. Thank you.

School baseball caps (£3.00) and Legionnaire's caps (£3.50) are available through ParentPay, should you wish to purchase one.

Y4 Help with Other Cultures

As part of our new learning journey our KS2 teachers are on the look out for anyone who can add experiences of different cultures to our learning. Perhaps you've visited a contrasting culture or know someone from a different cultural background? If so, can you please get in touch and help us out. Many thanks.

SATs Dates

The Key Stage 2 testing period for our Year 6 children will be week commencing Monday 14th May, Key Stage 1 testing for our Year 2 children takes place throughout May, and Phonics screening for our Year 1 children (and some Year 2 children) takes place week commencing 11 June. If you have a child in Year 2 or Year 6, please make sure you don't book any term time holidays during this period. It's really important to them and us that they are in school to take the SATs assessments. Thank you.

Attendance

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 6 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 100%!

Our average attendance this week is a whopping 98.3%. The first time this year that all year groups have been above the magic 96%. A tremendous achievement.

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.

Wider School Community Items

Buddies Relocation

A quick note to let you know that our pre/post school provider, 'Buddies', will be moving from the main hall to the classroom unit previously known as Nursery. This will allow the group to take greater advantage of the outdoor learning spaces in the summer months and provide a better indoor environment for this provision.

A polite reminder that should children bring bikes/scooters to school, they must not be ridden on the school playground or footpaths for health and safety reasons.
