A Note From The Principal
Dear NPE Families:
I truly can’t believe we are already in the month of October! We have so many exciting things coming up that I know both students and staff are excited for. Thursday, October 31st is a new event, our Character Parade. Students will go to their classrooms and the parade will begin at 9AM. We invite families to join us in our cafeteria for the parade, but for safety reasons families will not be allowed in any other part of the school. Also that last week in October, October 28- November 1, we have our annual book fair. To learn more keep reading this newsletter!
During the month of November we should try to think of all that we have to be thankful for. We have such great community support, parents and other community members that give so much of their time and their energy to Naples Park. We could not operate to the level that we do without our wonderful PTO and parent volunteers. Please know we are thankful for each and every family and all that you do.
Our student led conferences are scheduled for the week of October 20th and I do hope everyone is able to get in and have a conversation with their child so that you can review your their progress for the first quarter. It is so important to let them know you value all of their hard work. Our first report card of the school year will go home Friday, October 24th. At school, students continue to have Tier 2 Instructions so they may be working with different staff on re-teaching or enriching our grade level curriculum. Please ask your son or daughter how this is going for them.
I would like to spend just a few minutes on what the NPE Staff plan to work on this year. Every year we create a School Improvement Plan and this year one of the areas we plan to focus our attention on is students in 4th and 5th grade that are not making the expected growth in the area of math. Our entire staff is working hard with all students in all subject areas but we will try some targeted interventions with some of our 4th and 5th graders. Also, based on the data acquired from the district Panorama Survey given last year, we would like to focus on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) by starting a Mentor Program for some of our students. Teachers can refer students who need support in the area of emotional regulation to our mentor program. Mrs. Frizzi, our school counselor, will also conduct Breathe and Stretch sessions in the morning before school to teach students different strategies to control their breathing. If you would like to learn more about our SIP, you can contact me or better yet, maybe you want to attend one of our monthly School Advisory Council (SAC) meetings. Our next SAC meeting is Tuesday, October 22 at 3:15PM.
Again, Thank you for all that you do to make Naples Park such a great place to learn!
Warmest Regards,
Principal

REMEMBER: NEW CELL PHONE LAW IS NOW IN EFFECT!
A new state law made texting while driving a primary offense as of July 1. ... The second part of the law takes that a step further, making it illegal to use a handheld cell phone while driving in a designated school crossing, school zone or active work zone area.
**Please remember this includes the drop off and pick up lines. We want to make sure all of our students and staff are safe when loading and unloading each day.
A Note from the Assistant Principal
Dear Naples Park Families,
Happy October! The beginning of this school year has been amazing, and students have settled nicely into their routines at their new grade level. I am sure you have created your routines for homework after school as well. Below are a few tips to help make homework time a little easier.
· Develop and maintain a regular homework schedule. Often children are more successful after they have a little down time or snack before getting to work.
· Create a designated space for homework. It doesn’t matter if your child does his or her homework at the dining table, on the kitchen breakfast bar, or at an elaborate desk in his or her bedroom, but it is important to find a dedicated and QUIET space that is free from distraction so your little one can focus.
· Set a timer. Another great tip for those who want to know how to make homework less stressful is to use a timer. It may be easier for your child to focus for fifteen minutes at a time rather than trying to sit down and focus on completing an entire assignment at once.
· Consider a reward chart. This can sometimes make homework time less stressful. You may have sticker chart, or something hand written hanging on the refrigerator. Discuss with your child what rewards they would be willing to work for.
· Get involved and make it fun! Take the time to read through homework assignments with your child, help him or her brainstorm ideas and source materials for upcoming projects, and make a concerted effort to help make the experience enjoyable so you child looks forward to doing homework instead of dreading it.
We appreciate your partnership in supporting your child to help them reach their full potential. If you would like additional information on how they are progressing academically, please do not hesitate to call and schedule a meeting.
Sincerely,
Melissa Stamper

NPE will host our first School-Wide Storybook Character Parade
Naples Park Elementary will host our first School-Wide Storybook Character Parade on Thursday, October 31st at 9:00AM. Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite storybook character. Parents are welcome to attend and we will have seats available for visitors in the café. Students may choose any character from a book they enjoy following the guidelines in this letter. To support students’ feelings of safety and security in our building, violent or frightening costumes are not acceptable. No weapons or dangerous-looking items will be permitted to accompany a costume. Also, no masks will be allowed. Children are walking a fairly long distance and we are trying to prevent accidents.
Here are some examples of acceptable costume choices, and some examples of unacceptable choices:
Acceptable Examples
Fancy Nancy
Cinderella, Snow White, etc.
Greg Heffley (the Wimpy Kid)
Ramona
Superman, Spiderman, etc.
Ms. Frizzle
Babymouse
Bone
Olivia
Junie B. Jones
Nate the Great
Geronimo Stilton
Harry Potter, Hermione, Ron, etc.
Unacceptable Examples
Characters from Goosebumps
Vampires
Grim Reaper
Characters with guns or weapons
Witches, Ghosts or Goblins
Horror movie characters
Captain Underpants (inappropriate for school)
Fake blood
You do NOT have to buy anything new for this event. Instead, be creative – make paper ears, a hat, or wear the clothes the character would wear. Children should either carry the book or make a large name tag stating the title of the book they are representing. Children should come to school dressed as the storybook character, and should be able to go to the bathroom independently while in character. (After the parade students will be asked to change into school cloths so please make sure you pack a bag to put their costume in.) Students who do not wish to wear a costume may make signs or props to carry during the parade representing a favorite book character. Please talk with your child about how he or she would like to participate in this event, and mark your calendars!
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher. Thank you for joining us as we embark on this new tradition with our NPE sharks. We can’t wait to see all of your adorable characters parade around the school!!

Oral Language Development Tips
Oral language development is the first step in a child’s literacy development. By engaging your child in oral language activities, you are laying the foundation for your child to learn to read and write. Research tells us that children with strong oral language skills will most likely have strong reading and writing skills.
Here are a few ideas that promote oral language development:
- Talk to your child whenever possible. Children enjoy talking about friends, families, or favorite activities.
- Teach your child to look at you when you are speaking. Making eye contact is very important. The child needs to see your facial expressions, and hear your voice clearly. Do the same when your child speaks. This sends a clear message that you are listening and care about what your child is saying.
- Talk about what you are doing. Simple daily activities give wonderful opportunities for language development. It encourages conversational skills and helps the child to acquire general vocabulary.
- Encourage your child to sing songs, say rhymes, tell stories.
- Tell your child stories about when you were growing up, things from the past or things that will be happening in the future. You can use prompts such as, “What happened next?” or “When did that happen?”
- Read books together. Picture books are great way to increase vocabulary and get children talking.
- Stuffed animals and puppets are great tools for getting children to speak and use dialogue. Use the puppet or animal to share information, tell a story, or sing songs.

Reading and Writing Tips
- Bake/cook your favorite meal. Have your child read the recipe. Talk about the ingredients. Have your child retell the sequence of ingredients. This is a great time to use specific adjectives that will describe the food you are making.
- Play board games together (e.g. Scrabble, Pictionary, Monopoly, Uno, Memory games). Turn one night into Family Game Night!
- Organize a scavenger hunt where children seek out items that begin with certain letters of the alphabet (Alphabet Hunt).
- Can you read 25,000 pages in 80 days? This is called Around the World in 80 Days because it’s nearly 25,000 miles around the world. Set a goal for you and your family. How many pages can your family read in 80 days?
