Fourth Grade Feature

The fourth graders are attending the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra concert on Tuesday, February 9th. The theme for this year's concert is "Heroes." "Whether real or fictional, heroes can inspire us to do great things, like standing up for what we believe in, persevering when things are tough, or following our dreams. As you listen to the music on this concert, I hope it will inspire you to think about your heroes!" (Taken from the MSO Teacher Resource Guide)

The fourth graders listened for which instruments they heard in the music and brainstormed descriptive words to describe the music.

"Lift Every Voice and Sing" by John Rosamond Johnson and James Weldon Johnson

Fourth graders learned about the historical significance of this song composed by two twentieth century African-American figures. This song was composed for a celebration of Lincoln's Birthday and was later adopted by the NAACP as the group's official song. We have been practicing this song a number of times, as the first verse will be sung at the concert by all in attendance. :)

Overture to West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein

The fourth grade students learned about the plot of West Side Story, which is a 1950's American version of Romeo and Juliet. The students also watched the three songs that will be heard in the Overture to West Side Story: "Mambo," "Maria," and "Tonight."

"The Ride of the Valkries" from the Ring Cycle by Richard Wagner

Fourth grade students imagined and created their very own superhero. The students then imagined their superhero doing actions to the piece "The Ride of the Valkries."

"Cinderella's Waltz" and "Midnight" from the Cinderella Ballet by Sergei Prokofiev

The fourth graders discussed the Cinderella story and why Cinderella may be considered "heroic." The students then watched a clip of the Cinderella ballet, while listening for the twelve strokes at midnight from the chimes and also the woodblock marking the passage of time. The waltz starts around 1:20:00 and ends around 1:25:00.
