AES Teachers Continue Learning About UDL (Universal Design for Learning)

For the past four years, teachers at our school have been participating in targeted learning about UDL (Universal Design for Learning) through our participation in the NH UDL Innovation Network. Endorsed by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA),this is an educational framework based on decades of neuroscience research. The goal of UDL is to create expert learners who are purposeful, motivated, resourceful, knowledgeable, strategic, and goal oriented. This framework is being adopted by teachers, schools, and districts around the world and is considered best practice for teaching ALL students in an inclusive learning environment. What we love about UDL is that it empowers both teachers and students by putting students in charge of their own learning. We are thrilled to be moving along our journey of deepening our knowledge and implementation of UDL.

Close Observation in Ms. Lawler's Class

Ms. Lawler's Kindergarten class has been excited about the changing seasons and especially about the beautiful leaves we're finding on the playground. We practiced the skill of close observation by studying one half of a leaf in detail. Students looked carefully at their leaf to notice its shape and color and then sketched and painted the missing half. Our Kindergarten scientist/artists did an amazing job!

An Update from Muzart

Kindergarten artists are learning about looking at lines and shapes in art through the collage technique. We used the Studio Habit of Mind of “Stretch and Explore” to practice making collage images using some felt shapes on a felt background.

Artist in second grade are practicing the Studio Habit of Mind to “Observe” - learning to look carefully at things that may otherwise not be seen. We painted sunflowers after looking at and analyzing sunflower images.

have a wonderful weekend!
