Dr. Michele Bowers, Superintendent
Hello Lancaster School District families. I hope you are enjoying a restful, happy, and healthy summer break. As we continue our preparations for the 2021-22 school year, I wanted to share some important information and resources with you.
SCHOOL STARTS AUGUST 10TH!
It's Back to School Time! Here's What You Need to Know
WHEN DOES SCHOOL START? School starts Tuesday, August 10th. It is a minimum school day. Your school will resume a regular schedule for in-person instruction Monday through Friday with regular start times and minimum day Tuesdays. For more information, please use these links to view the 2021-2022 SCHOOL CALENDAR and SCHOOL START TIMES.
WILL MY CHILD HAVE TO WEAR A MASK AT SCHOOL? Yes. The Center for Disease Control (CDC), the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) – Appendix T1 have all provided Reopening Guidance for K-12 Schools mandating that all students and staff wear a mask when indoors at school.
WHAT SAFETY PROTOCOLS WILL YOU HAVE IN PLACE? We have been working hard for quite some time to prepare for the safe reopening of our schools. Some of our key health and safety measures include:
- All students and staff are required to wear a mask or other type of face covering when indoors
- All student desks and teacher desks will have a shield to help promote a safer environment
- We have increased staff support to further promote a clean and safe learning environment
- Students will be provided their own school supplies, textbooks, and computers
- Student and staff health screenings must be completed daily upon entry to the school campus using our digital PARENT LOCKER SYSTEM. Please be sure to register for the Parent Locker system online as soon as possible if you haven’t already done so.
- HEPA filters have been placed in all classrooms, gyms, and cafeterias
For more information, please review our Safe School Reopening Plan, COVID-19 Prevention Plan, and COVID-19 Response Plan (Please note that these documents are currently under review and are being revised for the 2021-2022 school year to comply with Department of Public Health guidance.)
WHAT IF I WANT MY CHILD TO CONTINUE DISTANCE LEARNING?
Senate Bill (SB) 98 permitted virtual/distance learning during the 2020-2021 school year only. For this school year, the 2021-22 Enacted Budget, Assembly Bill (AB) 130 was recently approved allowing for only two instructional models: in-person learning and the optional alternative model of INDEPENDENT STUDY. While we are enthusiastically ready to welcome back all students for full, in-person instruction five days a week when the school year begins on August 10, we have also designed an independent study program for students in need of this alternative model.
AB 130 permits all school districts to offer independent study in the 2021-22 school year in order for families to have an optional alternative instructional model for children whose health may be at risk by participating in in-person instruction. Independent study is a voluntary program in which students will be assigned an independent study teacher, provided online instruction and support opportunities Monday through Friday, and required to complete all assignments online at home. All independent study students will receive grade level work and access to innovative online elective opportunities.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON OUR INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM WILL BE SENT OUT NEXT WEEK. It will provide details on the schedule, frequently asked questions, and information on what students and families can expect. Thank you for your patience as we finalize our independent study program plans.
If you are interested in our independent study program for your child(ren), please contact our Lancaster Alternative Virtual Academy (LAVA) at (661) 488-7600 for more information or to register your child(ren).
