KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten Shelter Building Continues with Mrs. Paysour’s Class
Kindergarteners engaged in an Engineering challenge this month. Students were introduced to the Engineering Design Process by first asking questions such as, “What problem are we trying to solve?” “How can we make a shelter that will protect Penny from the sun?” “What is a shelter?” “Which materials are the best for blocking sunlight?” After we tested different materials, Kindergarteners then imagined and planned a shelter design. Once they created their shelter, they tested it out using a flashlight and improved their designs if necessary. It was such a fun way to introduce the Engineering Design Process to the little ones. Ask your child to share with you the Engineering Song they learned!

SECOND & THIRD GRADES
2nd/3rd grade Maker Workshop & Dino Making
2nd and 3rd grade students visited the STEM Lab this month for “Maker Workshop.” This was opportunity for students to have choice in what materials and tools they wanted to explore and “make” with. Students worked with a partner to create a variety of things including complicated cardboard contraptions, LittleBits hypnotizing machines or even Lego scenes using a variety of themed bricks. This “Maker” time celebrates invention, creativity, curiosity, and hands-on exploring/learning that inspires everyone to create!

STEM Showcase
A big shoutout to all the students who participated in the STEM Showcase and to their families for supporting them through the process. This is an optional project and requires a lot of time, hard work, and commitment to complete. Some students worked on their projects before school and during recess for several days. A big thanks to the PTA for providing Kona Ice for these students’ extra efforts.
Let’s recognize the 2019 STEM Showcase Participants. If you see any of them around, be sure to let them know how awesome they are!
