Mrs. Harris' Class News
March 23 - April 3
What We've Been Up TO
Happy spring! The past few weeks have been a whirlwind and it doesn't look like it's going to be changing between now and Spring Break! I'm sure many of you may have heard, but I was down and out with the stomach bug last Monday and Tuesday, but I'm happy to say that I've bounced back and am ready to finish up the month of March with a bang!
In math, students are learning about graphing. Following their graphing test on Wednesday students will begin learning about probability.
In science we are finishing up our last two science units of third grade. How crazy is that?! Right now we are learning about the six simple machines - levers, inclined planes, wheel and axles, pulleys, screws, and the wedge. We will also learn about compound machines before switching to the final science unit - soil.
In reading we have finally finished our nonfiction unit and for the remainder of the year will be using both fiction and nonfiction texts to determine author's purpose, main idea and detail, and drawing conclusions.
In writing, we are working on conducting our research on our self-selected animals. Currently, students are working in small groups to answer questions about their animals using print text. We will supplement that with online research before putting our information into a PowerPoint. I'm really excited to see how these projects turn out!
Stem Day: We had our third STEM Day on March 9. This time, the students were asked to come up with a Native American shelter that was small enough to fit on a desk top that would weather a rain and wind storm. Our class was SO excited that mud (yuck!) was a part of the available materials for this build, but this build was our toughest task yet! Some of our groups attempted to build a tee-pee, while others chose to construct a long home. I was impressed with group effort, even if I did have to share a lot of encouragement to not give up! Our last STEM Day will be the last week of school.
Thank YOU

- Report cards will be distributed later this week. Please make sure you view your child's report card and sign/return the envelope.
- I will be out on Friday, April 3. I know this is career day, but my husband is having oral surgery that morning and I feel the greater need is for me to be with him. I have arranged for an awesome sub that day and know our kiddos will be in excellent hands!
- Please continue to check your student's Fox Folder every Tuesday and Thursday when they come home.
