Background Information

-The Gathering to honor Hu Yaobang quickly became a major protest led by Beijing universities students

-The protests were triggered by the death of a popular liberal reformer Hu Yaobang, in April 1989

-The protesters called for greater freedoms of speech and press; increased funding for higher education; gov't openness; and to end gov't corruption(dishonesty)

-Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 were a series of student led demonstrations that took place in Beijing, China

-Marched through Beijing chanting democratic slogans

-On the night of June 3rd, soldiers and tanks began firing at many unarmed protesters while they were trying to flee

-On June 4th, gov't troops sealed off Tiananmen Square

Effects of Protest

-Chinese rulers sent the army to break up student protesters calling for democracy

-Chinese officials stated that 200 people died in the incident

-International observers believed more than 1,000 people had been killed
