You are receiving this newsletter because you have decided to participate in our 100% online school option. Thank you for joining Thompson Connect Online (TCO) for Fall semester 2020! We know there are plenty of questions, and we will be active in communication with you in the coming days and weeks. We apologize for not having been able to directly connect with you sooner. After the selection survey closed last week, you received final letters to confirm your participation. Now that we have received that confirmation from you, we can formally welcome you to our online school activities! This newsletter addresses various topics and provides contact information. Please review these ideas and click on the links for more information about our TCO staff and program plans.
We want to share how excited we are to have so much interest from TSD students and families! Because our numbers in TCO represent 20% of the Thompson School District, we have made many adjustments to our plans to make sure we can support each learner. We have secured our teaching staff for our K-8 grade levels and are clarifying our high school staffing. Class rosters and course lists are being finalized, and in addition to academic lessons, students will have access to social emotional and wellness supports. Within the next week, you will be receiving communications from TCO teachers to help you and your child to start to feel a part of our online community.
- Elementary school students will have teacher support to complete general education classes within the FLVS/Buzz learning system. For K-5 students, Morning Class Meetings will be scheduled 8-8:30 a.m. daily, in Google Meet or using a similar digital resource for online meetings for large groups. The rest of the school day consists of asynchronous ("anytime" or "on your own time" or "on demand") types of activities and synchronous ("same" or "real time" or "live") small group sessions, provided with educator support. Teachers will provide login information and expectations for participation in online and "on your own" learning times; teachers will also inform families on how to pick up the printed material that is provided to support their online learning activities.
- Middle school students will also have core classes and an elective. The online platform is Fuel Education (Fuel Ed). Teachers will support learning within this curriculum, and supplemental connections will be provided. Like elementary school, both asynchronous and synchronous sessions will be a part of the daily schedule. As the students are older, there may be more independent work opportunities and expectations.
- High school students will also use Fuel Ed for their course completion; their courses will align with their graduation plans. Because these students are older, they will have a significant amount of independent work time that is asynchronous. The coursework is rigorous, so teachers will support with additional sessions, and daily check ins will be scheduled so that students can access teachers, other students, and additional supports. Staff from the students' enrolled high school will support their successful progression toward graduation.
Thompson Connect Online (TCO) follows the TSD school calendar. The "first day" is actually a short check in for only three grade levels on Mon., 8/31/20. It is a "Transition" school day; students in Kindergarten, 6th grade, and 9th grade will be invited to a short, online introduction. It will not be more than 2 hours. Invitations will be sent from TCO staff. ALL TCO students (K-12) will have their 1st official day on Tues., 9/1/20. That first week (9/1-9/4/20), will be "part-time" (or half day) commitments for all levels. This is so that all students will have transition to the school year. Teachers will be sharing information with students and families about logging on for activities.
School & District Supports
TCO will benefit from active partnerships between TCO teachers and staff who specialize in Exceptional Student Services, English Language Development, and Gifted & Talented Education. Each student in TCO is an actively-enrolled student in a TSD school, so many district staff members will also be involved to help each student succeed.
