We have added spelling into our weekly language schedule. Students will have weekly activities to work through - if they are not completed at school, then they need to be completed at home for homework. Spelling activities will be collected Friday mornings. Students will test on their words on Fridays, as well. An explanation of spelling can be found below.

THIS WEEK
IN LITERACY & SOCIAL STUDIES:
- Writing - Students will recognize characteristics of a personal narrative, choose an important memory in their lives, and produce a memoir using the five steps of the writing process. This week we will be drafting, working on leads, descriptive details, dialogue, and conclusions. We will finish these this week.
- 5 A Day Language Review (week 8) - Language skills are covered in class Monday - Thursday, then quizzed on each Friday. Skills include figurative language, prefixes, suffixes, roots, synonyms, antonyms, verb tenses, analogies, multiple-meaning words, conjunctions, context clues, punctuation, and spelling.
This week's idiom - "cut from the same cloth"
This week's root - flec/flex: to bend
This week's proverb - "A man is known by the company he keeps."
- Spelling - Students will be reviewing/learning a weekly spelling feature using Words Their Way. This week we will be reviewing how to add -ing to words with vc and vcc spelling patterns. We will introduce the pattern on Monday, practice Tuesday - Thursday, then test on Friday. Students will have a sort they can practice with in their take-home folders. Students will not test on all of the words. Normally their spelling test will consist of 10-12 words. Because they will be learning a spelling feature, they will be tested on that feature and if they can apply it to different words, not the memorization of words.
- Read Aloud: Wonder by R.J. Palacio
