Darby Elementary's Spreading Kindness Campaign & 5th grade Softball Game
Spreading Kindness Campaign
Darby Elementary hosted their first Spreading Kindness Campaign the week of May 24, 2022. Students at Darby spread kindness by writing messages of kindness and inspiration with chalk on the playground and on large butcher paper. In order to spread kindness, we practiced sharing the gift of reading. Students were gifted reading books to enjoy over the summer. Restorative Practice Ambassadors (RPAs) checked-in with students on the playground during recess and asked them about what kindness looks like to them. As a treat they gifted them smiley face erasers and smiley paper wristband. Kindness is the easiest thing we can share with each other to make the world a better place!
5th grade RPAs helped to welcome parents as they came to watch the 5th grade Softball Game!

Van Gogh Charter Elementary's Students Practice their Civic Participation
Students in Ms. Jamie Malkin-Pica's 1st grade class have been working on a civic engagement unit where they were writing letters to an elected official when Board Member Scott Schmerelson came to visit Van Gogh. Students were so excited to be able to meet Mr. Schmerelson in person and had quite a list of demands when they spotted him on the yard. From asking for more recess to more art classes to more math and homework, students were not shy about sharing what matters most to them! The class invited him to visit their classroom after recess where Mr. Schmerelson got to read some of their letters and even participate in a geometry lesson. What an unexpected surprise for the students and a great opportunity for them to practice their civic participation in person!
Mr. Schmerelson also was able to visit with the amazing Food Service Workers, Librarian and spent some time with the kindergarten classes as they ate lunch. Thank you for your support and dedication to our schools, Mr. Schmerelson!
Porter Middle School Celebrations
Porter Competes in the Battle of the Books Competition
Porter students recently won $25,000.00 in the district Heroes for Zero Contest Porter teachers, Mr. Hill and Mr. Kangas, and several of their students worked hard to create a video that incorporated the six Heroes categories to conserve energy and show how we can be a ZNE (Zero Net Energy) campus. The students were required to research and find energy solutions, review usage data for our school, and create a strategic plan that can assist our school to be "ZNE ready" by 2024 and help meet the LAUSD district goal to become the most sustainable school district in the country. Congratulations Porter Heroes for Zero students! You are leading the way to a sustainable future!
