Beacon Bulletin
April 2018
Recap and Forecast
Senior Film Capstone Presentations began and will continue into May. Sophomore Arts Night was a delightful demonstration of the diligence and talent emerging from the 10th grade. Eleven Beacon students put their skills to the test and participated in the state SkillsUSA competition, 3 of those students won big!
Twenty-two of Beacon's thespians were inducted into the International Thespian Society, in a ceremony that was filled with expressive performances and exciting surprises. Founders kiddos "lit up the night" at the glow-in-the-dark themed Founders Spring Fling. Even with all of those events, our student artists still found time to give back by participating in the semi-annual Beacon Blood Drive and Pennies for Patients.
Beacon's SADD members took part in the 2018 Zombie Walk to the statehouse in support of "Kick Butt's Day," a statewide initiative to rally for stricter tobacco laws in order to protect youth from the harmful effects of smoking.
This month, our student artists have made the entire Beacon Community proud of their accomplishments and efforts to make a difference. We look forward to all that April has to bring, and we're sure our student artists will overcome the challenges that face them during PSAT/SAT and RICAS testing. Bring it on Spring!

Beacon Brag!
Three Beacon Students Earn First Place at State SkillsUSA Competition
At the Annual, SkillsUSA Competition over one thousand students from Rhode Island showcased their technical and vocational skills competing in categories ranging from Action Skills to Welding Sculpture. Eleven of those students competed on behalf of Beacon Charter High School for the Arts under the supervision of their dedicated Advisor Jade Illum, Beacon’s Culinary Arts teacher.
For the first time ever in Beacon history, not one, but THREE Beacon students won first place in their individual competitions. Senior Culinary Artist, Kennedy Chartier, earned top honors in Commercial Baking. 11th grader, and Visual Artist, Jada Nichols won first place in Customer Service. Finally, Mary Melo, an 11th grade Thespian, earned the top prize for her Prepared Speech.
These students worked tirelessly to refine and perfect their skills in preparation for competition. These awards were well-deserved. The entire Beacon Community would like to commend their efforts and congratulate these hard-working young ladies for being model student artists. We are looking forward to seeing these accomplished students compete in the National Competition, which will take place in Kentucky at the end of June.
